[identity profile] sarcastic-fi.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] sgarecfinders
Hi all!

I'm basically new to this fanfiction base; and I have watched all five seasons of SGA plus SG1 and SGU as it airs. So don't worry about spoilers. If someone could help me with some recs? I've discovered I love McShep AUs and have read a lot of what is on Wraithbait. In particular I'm looking for long AUs - be it a series (preferably finished) or a novel length one-off or whatever. I know there is a great AU list several entries below which I plan to get started on but its a bit daunting so if people could just provide me a few starter links to some of the really good AU's out there? I'm 20 so anything NC-17 is fine as well! Good charcaterisation is important to me, and I love it when other charcaters like Jeannie or even Carson are involved. Not fond of constant fluff or crack really, I do love some angst but stories with some fluff in are good too just not all the time. Sorry I am so picky!

So far I've read an au about John-the-cop who's bi-curious and falls for Rodney-the-musician who lives on a moor/bog. I realy enjoyed that one. And I read one about a widower-Rodney with a child to raise and John-the-cop is his next door neighbour. Also read several D/s based reality fics that took place in Atlantis or with teenage R/J are these were good too (by Xanthe over at Wraithbait). But please can I have a few more recs to start with! Paricularly things that aren't on Wraithbait. THANKS for any help.

It's got a lot of my favourite stories on it, plus I added a few to the list myself.

I can recommend "Unidentified" off the top of my head (I'm pretty sure that's in the big list) and "The Sacrificial Mage" (either in the big list or available at [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa's very recent master list post); both are McShep and long, and low on the actual sex content. One person's excellent characterization is another person's eyeroll, in many cases, and AUs add a significant wrinkle (especially given the scenario in "Unidentified"), but I found both of these to be effective and powerful.

Anything by Keira Marcos (http://keiramarcos.com/). She has several SGA AUs, one of which is complete with a sequel pending and the rest are WIPs, but she's a very reliable poster.

Aegis series, which starts with Aegis (http://www.sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=16), has a sequel Enthrall (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=46) and has another BB sequel Stricken (http://www.sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=71) and that page has links to the minor sequels in between.

Oh, and if you liked Xanthe's stuff, you might like Puddle of Goo's A Life Less Ordinary 'Verse. (http://puddle-of-goo.livejournal.com/23730.html)

Also, anything by rageprufrock/glitteri (http://glitterati.talkoncorners.net/fiction/index.php#sga), astolat/shallot (http://intimations.org/fanfic/#Stargate: Atlantis), and cesca/cesperanza. (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/atlantis.html)

I will probably be back later when I remember who I've left out that I should be deeply ashamed of myself for forgetting.

Ok, I should definitely be ashamed for not sending you Junk Cheap before, but in my defense I was thinking it was by one of the authors I gave you. Fortunately, shibela saved you from missing out. Oh, I recommend Keira Marcos' Sentinel AU "Awakening" also. It's not what you're looking for, but it explains a lot of her Sentinel 'verse, so I think it's good background for Sentinels in Atlantis. She also has a great rec list on her site.

MrsHamill has several good AU's here (http://www.hawksong.com/~thammill/SGA_Fic/SGA.htm). Raising Madison if you're in a sappy mood. Speaker for the Dead if you want to cry. Pegasus Purgatorio and Slouching Towards Bethlehem if you just want a good plotty AU.

RatCreature maintains an AU rec list (http://www.ratcreature.net/fannish_stuff/au_recs_sga.php#sga) and a set of thematic lists (http://www.ratcreature.net/fandom.php#thematiclists) that are beyond words. I particularly enjoy the Astaroth series linked under her Ancient!Sheppard listing and while you're on that series' page, link over and pull the Sentinels 101 'verse (assuming Sentinel fic appeals to you).

*Muses* I wish my roommate were home...I'll hit her up for recs and be back again later. I have to find the Martha Wells links.

http://www.ltljverse.com/watergate/storyindex.htm Found it! Note that her Retrograde and Hunting Parties 'verses have their own indexes linked at the top of the page.

Thanks to my roommate [livejournal.com profile] glasslogic for reminding me about resonant (http://trickster.org/res/#sga) and not mocking me at all really. Also, for reminding me to specifically rec Bell Curve, Hindsight and Summer House on the glitterati site I posted above.

You're welcome... I'll repeat what others have, as well: [livejournal.com profile] elderwitty's & [livejournal.com profile] anonymoouse's McShep AU list collaboration (http://elderwitty.livejournal.com/11289.html) - with more additions by too many more people to list here - pretty much has all the fandom favorites -- and I see they've adjusted it to reflect a roundabout word-count (YAY!!). So, pretty much it's a case of pick your pleasure of occupation (or word-count, in this case). I really haven't run into a fic there that isn't a great read.

Anyway...

Happy Reading!

[livejournal.com profile] shibela, did you know that there are 5 other stories in the Foster's Bakery 'verse? I didn't, 'til I happened across them (I can't even remember how). So it's not as short! Which is better!

A Place on the Corner by almostnever - 8,600
Remembrance Day by anatsuno & almostnever - 3,200

.... Seriously. I have so much love for you guys. I had not realized there was more to that 'verse. And now I can go into a diabetic coma - sort of - from all the bakery-by-reading I will be consuming. LOL!

Thank you for letting me know! Hugs & smooches to you & all who have been helping you accumulate such a wonderful resource.

That's part of why I'm doing the list. I know stuff that you don't. Whatever I don't know, someone else does. This way, we all get more. And I, as previously noted, am a fan of more.

You're most welcome! I'm paying it forward for all the great recs I've gotten from this group. *group hug for us all*

Long fics. Did you check out this year SGA Big Bang (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=pairings&id=1&year=2009)? There are a lot of AUs in there...
What I've read, so far:

- Know How To Fall: the one I would recommend first. It's not smuty (nor fluffy) and the plot really got me going for the whole thing... This is totally AU, meaning, there is no other galaxy, they aren't military and physicist.

- Make The Devil Feel Surprise: D/S with younger Rodney. You may have read it already... if not, a must! Not fluffy at all! - Partly AU, since they are in Atlantis.

- The Sweep of Easy Wind: NC-17 not overly smutty. Rodney centered. - Atlantis AU too.

But take a look at the list. Maybe some other summary will catch your attention...

Sheafrotherdon's "A Farm in Iowa"-Universe.

Start with the index post here: http://sheafrotherdon.livejournal.com/105567.html

But make sure to also use her Iowa-tag afterwards to catch anything that's not already listed there.

I fell in love with this AU so hard, I still haven't recovered from it. ;-)

Wrapped in Red Ribbon is definitely one I'd recommend (it's in the AU link post provided by aqualegia). John's a copy, Rodney's a forensic scientist, and they end up investigating a murder.

fictionresource (http://fictionresource.com/sga/) is a database I am particularly fond of. They have a ton of tags, and there is a ton of fics in the AUs sections. The really cool thing is that the AUs sections are separated into SF, contemporary setting, historical, quantum stargate: almost, and quantum: only a stargate. Happy hunting.

If you liked 'The Sacrificial Mage' or the Gifts AU (represented by Aegis, Enthrall and Stricken as posted above,) you'll also probably really like the Scruffy!AI series, also by Leah.
http://www.wraithbait.com/viewseries.php?seriesid=114

Leah is an extremely gifted writer who excells in the 'this totally makes sense!' AU for SGA. I am particularily fond of her Scruffy!AI. The POV of the Robots is incredible...

Enjoy!

Welcome to the fold! It's always great when someone else gets sucked into this fantastic fandom, and my god, are you going to be spoiled for choice!

There are so many truly great writers in this fandom, and the quality of fic out there tends to be very high. And there is a hell of a lot for a McShep fan to read.

I have to just add though, that you can also enjoy a lot of this fic as podfic. And some of the all time McShep AU classic stories are available to dowload to your mp3 or ipod from this brilliant site (http://audiofic.jinjurly.com/category/fandomstargate-atlantis)

You can search for fic titles such as the "Junk Cheap" McShep AU in the search box in the top right, or narrow the category down to specific authors like the always awesome Speranza or Shallot etc.

Enjoy!

WELCOME!

Go to SGA Big Bang site for up to 100+ Lo-o-o-n-g AU's. For 2007,2008 and 2009. Here: http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/index.php
Plus Xanthe has amazing stuff, if you can read ROMANTIC bdsm, then look at 'General & Dr Sheppard, 'Coming Home' and 'Hiding in Plain Sight'
her site is here:http://www.xanthe.org/SGA/sga.htm

Above all, the epic story that DOMINATED SGA fandom in 2008 was 'Written By the Victors'. Atlantis breaks away from Earth..its by Cesperaza, who has writen about 5 of the top 20 SGA fics:
Her Site:http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/atlantis.html (check out her stories 'Ordinary Life' (John makes jason Bourne look like a weakling) 'Sheppard's Law' and 'OK Computer' whilst you're there)

In SGA you're about to discover some brilliant writers! ENJOY! :)
