Hi, real quick question which I really should have thought of sooner:

Please tell me of any SGA (or SG, SGU, and related) communities here on dreamwidth that you know of.

Link them, tell me a bit about them - what is their focus, are they active/mainly an archive these days, anything you know, really.

I'll see about incorporating them to our links and also try reaching out to their mods so we're all interconnected here like we were over on lj.

So, any Stargate (Atlantis, original series, Universe, the original movie, etc) related dreamwidth community you know - is very very *very* welcome in the comments. <3

Hi everyone,

This community (and hopefully all of its posts, comments, and tags) were backed up from sgagenrefinders.livejournal.com between last night and today by the dw importer.

About the name change: it's happened, it's a less confusing name, I hope folks will be able to find this place, and let's say no more of it unless any issues arise which we'll deal with if/when they do.

Now, some things will be broken because the importer does not know which dreamwidth usernames (and comms, etc) correspond with lj ones so don't be surprised by all the OpenID posters or random links to the lj comm; I'm doing my best to fix the latter, but will probably be hunting stray ones for a while.

If you want to join the comm here you're welcome, and I've added a new mod just so we have an extra pair of eyes on this place other than my own. (It's not a huge job with our usual number of posts lately, but spammers and trolls, and of course the need for tagging posts for folks, do occur every now and then.)

That's all I really had to say. Welcome to backup plan I guess?

Hello,

in light of the ongoing TOS hoopla, please allow us to take a few moments of your time to clarify a few things:

- If you're uncomfortable with accepting LJ's latest TOS, you're probably going to want to move your journal to Dreamwidth. It's fast, easy, and you can import your whole LJ account. Quite a few people are talking about moving there.

- Quite a few people have already moved there. There's always a bit of an exodus every time LJ screws up, which, lets face it, isn't exactly the rarest of occasions.

- At this point, while there are some plans to move this community over to DW eventually for your posting convenience or at least establish a mirror, we have no intention of moving away from LJ entirely or immediately.

- That said, there is an sgagenrefinders comm over at DW already. We are not affiliated with them in any way, shape or form, but if you're uncomfortable with using LJ at this point, they might help you out over there.

- If and when we move, we'll announce it here. Both mods have accepted the new TOS, so we'll continue to run sgagenrefinders as we have for the past 11 years. (It was our birthday a few days ago! Happy anniversary, fandom searchers-and-finders!)

If you have any questions or concerns, you can comment here, use our Contact-a-Mod Post or, as always, send us a PM.

We're very happy to see this community still alive and well after all these years and hope you continue to have as much fun in the SGA fandom as we have. ♥

Hi folks,

Due to anonymous comment spammers persisting in targeting this community and lj!PTB not being willing to do anything for all the months this has been happening I'm forced to turn off anonymous comments until the spammers go away.

What this means is you'll only be able to comment if you have a livejournal (lj for short) account - the good news is you can now log into lj with other accounts too, e.g. facebook, twitter, the list goes on, so you don't have to make an lj account if you don't want to.

I'll be turning anon comments back on periodically to check for spammer activity - as long as there's incoming spam I won't leave it on, but if there's none I'll turn it back on. Till the spammers start up again, and so on.

Rest assured that as soon as it's safe anon comments will be back on, just don't expect a post about it, as it might take several tries till the spammers give up for good. Or at least more than a few days.

Thanks for understanding!

Debris, comm mod

Once more, because the last post on the subject didn't seem to work for very long:

Please don't post specific fic searches in the comments or posts at this comm, they are against our rules. Please use [livejournal.com profile] sgastoryfinders for all your specific fic finding needs instead.

I will have to start penalizing folks if this trend of rule breaking continues, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't force me to take that step. Especially folks who answered a rule-breaking post or comment, it would be swell if they remembered that aiding and abetting rule breakers doesn't exactly remind them to not do it again, does it? So I'd appreciate it if you didn't do that. It would make the modly job much easier, and everyone could be happy with the comm without mods walking around grumpily muttering under their breaths wishing they could just delete whole threads that stay up only because they provide that one rec more to the comm. So a little understanding for the modly side of things in return would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!
[identity profile] debris_k.livejournal.com
I wanted to remind all our lovely commenters and posters that [livejournal.com profile] sgastoryfinders is just one stargate journey away and welcomes everyone's specific SGA fanfic searches indiscriminately. (Unless you also include a rec or genre search, those belong here exclusively; you shouldn't mix the two in the same post at either comm.)

So: [livejournal.com profile] sgastoryfinders, for all your I-can't-remember-it-but-I-know-the-fic-I-mean! finding needs.

With ♥,

[livejournal.com profile] sgagenrefinders (still for all your rec-me-some-fics-like-this-or-that-but-mostly-of-this-kind-maybe needs :D )
[identity profile] debris_k.livejournal.com
Due to an onslaught of anonymous spam comments at the comm in the last several days, and lj's failure to put a stop to them, anon comments have been turned off for the time being. They'll be turned back on as soon as the anon spammers cease and desist and/or are launched through the nearest space-gate.

In the meantime if you need to you can contact the mods, [livejournal.com profile] debris_k and [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan, anonymously at their journals. If you want to leave recs for someone but can't log in you can leave me a comment here with the details and I'll repost your comment for you here at the comm.

I hope to be able to turn anon comments back soon. Thanks for your understanding and patience!

<3,
your mod

P.S. If you see any spam comments on posts here let us know and we'll go after them with our spam-busters blazing! Spam is like the Wraith, they suck the life out of everything, and we take the war against them very seriously. (You should see our anti-spam serums. ;-D )
[identity profile] debris_k.livejournal.com
I'd like to remind all our members, old and new, that [livejournal.com profile] sgastoryfinders is that-a-way *points stage left* and if you have lost a fic and would like to find it that's the place to post to. As opposed to here, obviously. (And if someone reminds you of your mistaken posting place please don't leave your post up; a mod will still have to delete it for you, but she'll be less happy about it.)

Also, anon comments are back on. Here's hoping our friendly neighborhood spammers have taken the time to become account-wielding spambots in the meantime so we can just ban them. *fingers crossed*

I'm turning anonymous comments off until LJ gets that latest influx of spam bots under control. If you absolutely have to comment to someone anonymously, hop on over to my own journal to leave an anon comment there. I'll forward it if it's not too offensive.
[identity profile] debris_k.livejournal.com
Our profile page now sports a much neater and extra secure search box, for all your past [livejournal.com profile] sgagenrefinders post searching needs! (Note that only posts that are public and have no adult content can be searched, so don't forget about the tags! ;-D )

This is our new search box:

sgagenrefinders@lj the whole web

We hope you'll have lots of fun with it!

You can find the old ljseek.com search box behind the cut )

As ljseek.com's searches haven't been behaving as they should for a while now we felt the change justified. But if you've been relying on the old search box, or another search site and would like it featured as a 'box, drop us a comment and tell us all about how you've been successfully using it and we'll see what we can come up with based on your feedback.

tl;dr Search box feedback? Yes, please!

<3's,

your mods

It looks like (anonymous) spam comments have reared their annoying heads again on seemingly random posts (old and new) so here's a quick how-to into dealing with them:

  • if the spam is on an entry you posted, here's what to do:
    - tick the ticky box next to the offending comment(s)
    - at the bottom of the page choose Delete as Spam (from the Mass action on comments drop-down menu) and click Perform Action

screencap of this under the cut )

  • if it's not on your own post let the mods i.e. us know and we'll jump to the post with our spam-busters a-blazing

  • if the spam is not anonymous lj does not want you to report that user as a bot; for further details you can check out the lj FAQ article How do I mark a comment as spam? What does this option do?

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions they're welcome both here and at the usual contact-a-mod post.

Now let's bust some spam! *g*

The SGA fandom is a huge and wondrous place. If you can think of a story, it's probably been written (unicorns and rainbows, anyone?), and if you want to find similar ones, that's what we're here for.

Since occasionally whatever you're looking for will be outside popular interest, we put up our rule 5, which can be paraphrased thus: you can look for whatever you want as long as you're being nice about it; in return, we'll try to make sure everyone else won't jump down your throat.

Whether it's character bashing, a particular kink, or wildly OOC scenarios that directly contradict canon, you can look for it. Serial killer!Teyla? Go for it. Happy-go-lucky kindergarten teacher!Rodney? Go for it. Woolsey dies in a ball of fire? Go for it.

What you cannot do is phrase your request in a way that attacks other users, directly or indirectly, or indulge in any character bashing yourself. Woolsey dies in a ball of fire because he's a bureaucratic wimp and usurped Sam's place and deserves to suffer? No go, post deleted.

What you cannot do is tell people off for posting a particular search, whether to inform them they must be sick for wanting to read about a certain kink or to tell them what they're looking for is OOC. A lot of searches on this comm aren't canon-conform; see also: McKay/Sheppard.

What you cannot do, at least not here, is judge people for seeking the stories they do. Wanting to see if anyone has written about Ronon the serial rapist doesn't mean they see Ronon that way, or like serial rapists, or think rape is okay. Please don't leave any comments that imply otherwise. (What you post in your own journals, however, is naturally your choice, and yours alone. The wank, you may invite her anywhere but here.)

We'd like to think that fandom is large and inclusive enough to allow for infinite diversity in infinite combinations. We may not always understand your searches, but we will provide a place for them.

As an aside, while we-the-mods will try (and probably fail on occasion, sadly) to ensure that this community is a safe space for everyone, we do have our own likes and opinions, and we will talk about them in our and other people's personal journals. Please note that debris/lavvyan-the-person's opinions aren't necessarily the ones debris/lavvyan-the-mod will enforce/defend/smack down over here; that's what the rules are for.
[identity profile] debris_k.livejournal.com
Important if you're tracking or have linked to any pairing tags: they are now all in alphabetical order by character names, so you might need to go and retrack or relink. It had to be done, it's been mild pairing tag chaos for while now and this should be easier to navigate.

I've also added a dozen or so new pairing tags (you can find them among our tags), and am still adding posts to some more popular ones (need I mention the tons of Rodney and John pairings of all kinds? the boys have still got it, alright) but I hope to be finished tonight. (Then, the 'other SGA character(s)' tag needs tackling, and then I hope not to have to sort any tags for a while. >.< )

Anyways, a small new rule to go with the new '[character]/other' type of pairing tags — if there's no pairing tag matching your request, e.g. Lorne/Zelenka, then the pairing tags 'Lorne/other' and 'Zelenka/other' should be added. If there's no pairing tag for a character then the old system of character tag plus character or pairing tag still does the deed. (And thus the Lorne/Zelenka requests can be found under the combined Lorne/other + Zelenka/other tags.)

Hope that's clearer than mud. Let me know if you need further explanations, or if you have any suggestions, questions or problems with any of the tags.

...And back to the tagging I go. *waves*
[identity profile] debris_k.livejournal.com
Since lj now has a shiny new-ish setting which enables adding tags to a comm post by the poster and the mods but no one else, I'd like to know how you'd feel if this comm was switched to that setting.

To remind you, currently any post here can be tagged by any comm member and the mods. This means that sometimes you can help your friend or a random stranger out by adding a missing tag or two to their post, but also means that after a mod has cleaned up the tags on a post a random passerby can add back tags (usually blamed on the OP even if they're not at fault).

Let us know if you're for the changing of the tag-adding setting or against it by leaving a comment. (Leaving thumbs-ups on already posted comments counts just as much as full explanations of why you prefer one setting to another.)

Looking forward to finding out your opinions on this,

your tag-happy (or exasperated by, on some days) mod. :-)

ETA: Since folks were leaning towards the new setting, it has been implemented. Posts can now be tagged by: Entry's author, maintainers and moderators.
Opinions for or against are still welcome, and will be taken into consideration.

if a post of yours to this comm mysteriously disappears, please assume it's because a mod deleted it. The proper response is not to put up the same post again immediately. Instead, we ask that you follow these three steps:

1. Read our rules. Did your post break one of them? If yes, please don't do it again. If no, proceed to step two.

2. Check your inbox. Did you receive a comment from one of the mods announcing the deletion of your post (note: if you don't have LJ's notifications set to "Someone replies to my entry in a community" with the ticky box "Delivery method: Email" checked, this step won't work for you and you might think about putting that ticky there) and explaining why? If yes, there you have it, and please don't do it again. If no, proceed to step three.

3. Contact the mods. If you choose to do so via PM, please make sure your privacy settings allow us to reply. If both mods tell you that no, they didn't delete your post, you can safely assume that LJ ate it.

In that case, and only then, you are welcome to repost your search. In all other cases, your post will be deleted again and the mods will develop that Twitching Eyelid of Impending Poking with the Modly Stick of DoomTM. And no fun will be had by anyone.

To everyone east of the date line: Happy New Year! To everyone west of the date line: Happy New Year, almost!
[identity profile] lavvyan.livejournal.com
Listen up, minions! Dearest members who use this community to find stories,

please let me direct your attention toward your one major resource: your fellow fen. The people who rec you their favourite stories. The people who create huge thematic lists and keep track of just about everything the SGA fandom has to offer. The people who look at your post and think, "ooh, I know one like that, now where's the link..." and spend the next half-hour or longer browsing through their Delicious tags or the thousands of files they've got saved to their hard drives. In other words, the people who invest a lot of energy into ensuring you've got exactly the kind of fic you want to read, just when you're craving it the most.

Are you picturing them? Good. Now let me quote a request from our user info that's gone a bit ignored recently:

If you ask for stories of a certain genre, please remember that those answering your request are putting time and effort into doing so, which means that the least you can do is say thank-you. This community relies on the good will of its members, and positive feedback encourages participation. We cannot and will not force you to be polite; however, if we know you as someone who appreciates the effort, we will be more likely to go the extra length.

I know of several people who are unhappy enough about the way their comments have gone by unacknowledged lately that they are reccing less or not at all anymore. That sucks. It takes less than a minute to reply to someone's comment with a brief thank-you, so if you have the time to post your request and read the stories you're pointed at, I don't see why you wouldn't have the time to say thanks to those who do the pointing. It's in your own self-interest, after all.

As stated above, we can't force you to be polite, nor do we want to. We're your mods, not the Courtesy Police. But hey, if you screw up your post? Chances are that if we know you as someone who regards the reccers of this comm as a tool rather than the helpful people they are, we won't quietly fix your tags or point out what you got wrong, but make the whole thing disappear without comment. You know. Quid pro quo.
[identity profile] debris_k.livejournal.com
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] skaredykat the comm now has three new tags:

asexual
other SGU character(s)
SGU

From now on requests for Stargate Universe crossovers or fusions should go under the new SGU tag rather than the crossovers & fusions tag as before. This does NOT mean that SGU rec searches are now welcome here — this comm is still purely for SGA fanworks and SGA crossovers or fusions.

As always if you know of previous posts that would fall under these new tags please add them, and feel free to contact me for anything tag related.

Remember that if you want to ask for a new tag you need to collect at least three posts that would fall under it and we'll go from there.

Thank you all for making this comm such an awesome place, and don't forget to tag your post!

♥!

We look forward to hearing from you!

<3,

Beloved members,

us mods are here to make sure this community runs as smoothly as possible and to answer your many and varied questions. We like doing that; it gives us a sense of purpose!

However, if you PM us via LJ, please make sure you don't have your privacy options set to disallow messages from strangers. It's a bit frustrating to compose a reply to your inquiry, only to find we can't actually send it. Let us help you!

Love,
