I've written John's mom a couple of times.

In my Honky Tonk Blues series, where John is a teacher but also plays guitar and sings during his off hours, his mom passed away when he was a kid but she features heavily in the flashback installment One Summer Night (https://archiveofourown.org/works/6927727).

And I wrote a standalone ficlet of Rodney meeting John's still-living mother for the first time, in The Chance to Be Good (https://archiveofourown.org/works/22286494).
