The first expedition went wrong

Hey guys! I was inspired by a previous post about Rodney and John not going to Atlantis, and I was wondering if you could help me find some Rodney-centered fic where the first expedition to Atlantis goes wrong, and they could either be forced to come back to earth, or have to send for new people to help Atlantis because Rodney wasn't with them for whatever reason. It can be gen, friendship, team, or McShep. Any genre pretty much goes from Canon to AU to Canon AU, etc. Crossovers and fusions are most welcomed, as long as the SGA crew is the main and centered characters in the story, mainly Rodney. I'm not into BDSM or power games or porn (sex without plot). I just want a well-written, in character story with a plot.

I can only think of two:

Leanne's The Sheppard Equation (http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=15973). Rodney-POV, he's working something for Sam Carter when her "cousin James" (*cough*John*cough*) shows up. Rodney's far enough removed from the SGC that he doesn't know about Atlantis, but things didn't go so well without him, as he eventually finds out.

Keira Marcos's What Might Have Been (http://keiramarcos.com/what-might-have-been-series-atlantis-au/) also had a missing Rodney and a failed expedition, and it's set back on Earth afterwards. It may be kind of heavy on the porn for you, but it's also very plotty, if a little high-drama :) and if I'm reading you right, you'd probably enjoy the fact that Rodney tends to be very appreciated by people throughout the story.

There are a lot more where John's the vital missing piece, alas. I hope you get some other good ones!

Try 'The Perfect Choice' by Tarlan. http://archiveofourown.org/works/527954 . It's a while since I read it and I've forgotten the whole story except that it was good and it just about fits your search requirements. Plus anything by Tarlan is good.

Summary
Instead of returning to the SGC after the Anubis incident, Rodney stays in Siberia, and Elizabeth chooses Kavanagh to be her chief of Science for the Atlantis Expedition. Having designed and built the Daedalus, Rodney persuades O'Neill to let them go search for the missing Atlantis Expedition.

I love the Criss Cross series by Quasar. Kind of has that. The first story is about our John getting switched with an AR John. But the other stories focus on AR John (once he is returned to his reality), where neither he nor Rodney went to Atlantis in the first wave but made it 2 years later. Lots of interesting differences and characters, including clone Jack O'Neill who went in John's place.
