[identity profile] mecurtin.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] sgarecfinders
I'm having a spate of being really irritated at how easily people on TV and in stories get over concussions, especially repeated ones. So I want stories where concussions have *realistic* consequences, for weeks or months or permanently.

And in case anyone wants fic inspiration: while googling for info, I found this article:
In some instances, the concussed can feel very much like he's on another planet. The sky itself can change to colors the sky shouldn't be at a particular time.

"This color obviously isn't going to be blue. It can be a color that can be orange. It can be red. The sky could turn green,"
Gen, McShep, other pairings -- except no Sheppard/Mitchell, please, they're my personal squick (it's not you, it's me).

Agreed! Concussions are traumatic brain injuries, but are often used as a plot device to get a character out of the picture for a while without it being life-threatening. It's a firmly entrenched trope--just too convenient not to use. But I'd also like to see a fic where it's treated seriously....

Fundamentals of Shipwreck Prevention (http://candle-beck.livejournal.com/157063.html?style=mine) is McShep.

The Edge of the Bridge (http://jimandblair.livejournal.com/69272.html#cutid1) is gen; it's more than a concussion, but the severity of the injury is definitely there.

Flip Side (http://aries-taurus.livejournal.com/3549.html#cutid1) is the first fic I thought of when I saw this request; it's also gen.

The Days After (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4648429/1/The_Days_After) is a post-Prodigal genfic; it may not be quite as exact as you're looking for, but it does deal with the aftereffects of a head injury.

Hopefully those are sort of what you're looking for!

Right! I've got no recs to offer you either, but the "Ah, it's just a slight concussion" trope drives me bananacrackers. Have none of these writers noticed what's going on with football players and boxers? http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/f/football/head_injuries/index.html.

modly reminder

I do hope you meant to say in case anyone wants reccing inspiration, because fic prompts belong in comms which don't have rules against them like we do. :-)

P.S. I forgot to mention we also have a rule about editorializing, because reasons for why's and why-not's are best kept for places where personal opinions, and not fic recs, are the main topic. :-)

It's been over three weeks and as I got no response from you, the post remains unchanged, and some wonderful folks went out of their way to provide recs so I don't want to delete all their efforts along with the post I'm revoking your posting privileges for one month. Next time please try to respond to modly requests in a timely manner.

I'm sorry -- I was embarrassed, and also couldn't really see how to edit properly. Are strike-throughs the done thing, or just deleting offending elements?

I also wasn't sure how to edit to avoid "editorializing" -- people seem to include mood info ("I'm really sad, so I'd like happyfic") and that's how my intro seemed to me. I was by *no means* talking only about SGA.

If you'd like me to give editing a crack, please reply. I do not argue with the one-month suspension.

Hi, well, when I asked you to edit I just meant change the wording as I mentioned in my original comment, or something closer to suggested than what is in the post now. (And by edit I mean delete and replace, not strike-through or anything fancy like that.) You can edit your post by logging in (if you're not already) and clicking Edit Entry (http://www.livejournal.com/editjournal.bml?journal=sgagenrefinders&itemid=955877); just hit save when you're done. :-)

Avoiding editorializing is not that complex either; we do allow, as you mentioned, short occurrences which don't invite (or can be seen to do so) discussions because it would be exhausting for everyone involved to police every word of every post. But when asked to make your post more to the point we ask just that: pick out the parts relevant for folks to know what to rec you i.e. what you're asking for re: fic recs, and try to cut short(er) the how's and why's of the background of your search. It's not a case of 'just the search or we will delete your post!', just a reminder that more to the point in your post is more to the point of the comm in the first place. :-)

Hope that clears things up a bit. Feel free to let me know if not, either here or at the Contact-a-Mod (http://community.livejournal.com/sgagenrefinders/758514.html?mode=reply) post.

I just self-recced this to Gaffsie, but apparently I'm shameless: By Whirlwind Scattered (possibly more serious than a concussion; but there are no doctors around).

There it is, the one I thought of. Deals with the consequences of untreated head trauma.

Eh, this is a YMMV thing, ever since I was a teenager I've managed to get concussions on almost a yearly basis, and I almost always get over them in a week with no lasting side effects. The one time that wasn't true, it took a month to get over, and the only lasting side effect turned out to be that I don't get migraines any more.

I am so sorry for being nosy but I have to ask, what do you do for a living, or is it a hobby?

Um, I'm just very, very clumsy. And when I was a teenager, there was at least one that came from siblings roughousing with me.

Teyla has a head injury which has affected her memory and left her weak and disorientated in Sholio's Jumper Down (http://sticksandsnark.livejournal.com/35660.html)

There is an established relationship between Teyla and Rodney but it's still pretty Gen.
