Active Communities/Challenges?

I hope this is appropriate for this comm! I've been writing in the SPN fandom for a while but I'm totally new to the SGA fandom. I've been looking for active comms and any writing challenges for SGA and I'm having real trouble. I really enjoy participating in writing challenges in particular. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

sga_saturday is a weekly prompt comm and is really fun
mcsheplets is bi weekly and has posts where you can leave plot bunnies.

Atlantis big bang is on dreamwidth but I think sign ups are over :( but maybe you could pm the mod and ask? Drafts are due August 15th.

Ummmm I can't think of anything else off hand and on my phone but if I find something I will let you know!

sga_smooch runs for a couple of weeks every few months. The amnesty from the last round will be coming up this weekend if you feel like writing kissing fic. And if you aren't already watching it, keep your eye on sga_noticeboard; if new challenges go up, they'll probably be announced there.

We (sga_genficathon) actually start revealing fics next week! But we will have a bonus round after the main fics are revealed, by the way, if you do find yourself with a plotbunny or want to check out our prompts list. (No pressure, of course!) Not so much a challenge comm, though.

You may also want to watch sga_newsletter. It's posted every day (yay). You'll find not only specific challenges but also fic written in a number of gen/het/slash communities.

Although you don't actually say if you are looking for slash pairings, so I hope I don't offend.

Nope, not offended at all. I should've mentioned that I write slash lol. I'll read anything but everything I write turns slashy despite any intentions I might've had otherwise ;)

So far I'm pretty sure I could write for McShep, McDex or Sheppard/Dex so thats where I'm leaning. Thanks!

How about rodneymckay_gen?

It less than a year old, runs regular challenges, is for anything gen which Rodney is prominently in and is currently running an Anything Goes Bingo challenge.

Looking around this post most of the things I would have thought of have been covered already!

If you're looking for prompts/writing suggestions you could do worse than try sga flashfic (http://sga-flashfic.livejournal.com/). For all that it looks dead 1)the amnesty was never closed and 2) people still visit, read and comment on this comm. Plus judging by how long she kept the Due South flashfic open I suspect cesperanza isn't planning on closing it any time soon!

Finally about the fandom...people keep saying it's dead but it looks pretty darn active to me!

I will check it out. I'm kinda blown away by the response to this post and immensely grateful to the mods for allowing it to stay. Sometimes all it takes is something like this to get everyone together and say "Wow, there's lots of us still here" lol.

I'm extremely excited. Sounds like there's lots more fic that'll be written and eventually make it to the lists here ;)

And I know you you said mainly write slash but there are a good few recs there which are by writers who *do* mainly write slash.

Well, there are several character- and pairing specific communities. What sort of stories do you plan to write?

There's always sga_kinkmeme (which can also be found on Dreamwidth (http://sga-kinkmeme.dreamwidth.org/). It's slow-moving, but it's active.

If you write McShep I'm pretty sure sign-ups for mcshep_match begins soon, and in September it's time for my favourite challenge of the year, sga_santa. Mostly I recommend the newsletter. It gives a great overview of what goes on in fandom, including writing challenges and new communities.

I found the kinkmeme during my search in the beginning and friended right away. I couldn't tell if it was still active and its nice to know it still is! Ran right over and friended sga_santa - love those challenges! Thanks :)

It's kind of hard to tell since it's slow and open both on DW and LJ. I recommend using their pinboard (https://pinboard.in/u:sga_kinkmeme) account for finding fills and prompts. It's a lot easier than slogging through the prompt posts themselves.

sga_santa is great! It's one of those challenges I look forward to every year (the others being satedan_grabass and sg_flyboys).

Starting your post of with "I hope this is appropriate for this comm!" might not be the best idea as it gives the mods a bad case of itchy fingers than can only be cured by the deletion of the post in question; if you're uncertain on any point concerning the comm using the Contact-a-Mod! (http://community.livejournal.com/sgagenrefinders/758514.html?mode=reply) post is recommended. (And it keeps the mods' fingers itch-free, too! *g)

Eek! Yeah, that was a total fail on my part! This is where I grovel and ask that you restrain the itchy fingers for the sake of all newbies. Ok, way overdramatic but still, I can't believe the response this post has received and its a wealth of information. It probably could be found by surfing the newsletter (which I didn't know about until this) but the tone of the response is so welcoming...it makes you want to be part of the fandom. I'm kinda blown away by that.

There's small but steady traffic at atlantiskink, which includes occastional het fic. Crossroads (http://sga.fictionresource.com/) is an index to SGA slash only fanfics that lets you search the fics by a variety of tags; updates are posted to sga_crossroads. I believe the most active site for new SGA works is Archive of Our Own (http://archiveofourown.org/tags/Stargate%20Atlantis/works). There's a way to subscribe to an RSS feed (http://archiveofourown.org/archive_faqs/19) of all new SGA works from AO3 but I haven't figured it out yet. :-P

I think you can just friend ao3_sga. I have it on my flist, anyway, and it seems to feed me a regular stream of new SGA works on AO3.
