Characters' background

Hello again!:-) Could you guys please point me in the direction of stories that explore the characters' backgrounds? John and Rodney's relationships with their families, John's military past, Ronon's life on Sateda before it was destroyed by the Wraith (would love to read about his poet/painter/singer past!), Teyla's childhood on Athos (how did she become the leader?..), Elizabeth's youth (how did she come to be the diplomat that she is?..), Jennifer's pre-Atlantis life (what made her go to Atlantis if she was so unsure about herself?..) - that sort of thing. I'd really appreciate it if you guys could help me out.:-) One thing, though: when it come to SGA, I'm pretty canon-oriented, so could you please rec the stories that do not contradict the canon facts that we know from 5 seasons of SGA in a major way? For example, if John's father is a Cold War colonel and not Patrick Sheppard, it's not the kind of story I'm interested in (not that there's anything remotely wrong with the stories that were jossed! I just prefer canon-compliant fic when it comes to the characters' personal histories because I watched all 5 seasons of the show at once, and I *like* the hints of the backstories that canon gave us).

It doesn't matter if the stories are gen, slash, or het. Examples of background exploration stories that I have read and truly enoyed are "Teenage Kicks" by rheanna27 and "Still Haven't Found" by xparrot. I'd love to read something along those lines.

If you have an account with Delicious, Diigo, or Pinboard, you can do a search of everyone's tags for sga+backstory or sga+pre-series and come up with tons of hits.

My backstory tags are here and the pre-series ones are here. They range from gen to NC-17 (and seriously kinky), het and slash, canon, canon AU, Mensa AU, and earthside AU, so pay heed to the other tags. You can also do a search for "sheppardfamily" -- that one seems popular -- and variations on Jeannie (Miller).

Two stories in particular that feature backstories as part of the plot: Written by the Victors (AU futurefic) and Sheppard's Law, both by Speranza.

Thank you! I don't have an account with any of these, but I do sometimes look through other people's Delicious bookmarks, so at least this one is not completely unfamiliar, unlike the other two.:) The Pinboard doesn't seem to work for me, unfortunately. I can't see the actual links. But thank you for the recs! I have heard so many good things about Written by the Victors, but haven't actually gotten around to reading it yet. And Sheppard's Law seems to be exactly what I'm looking for!

These are the ones I know are (mostly) canon and are some of my favorites:

Aphorism by elementalv: There were some duties John would rather avoid. Slightly different take on John's family but nothing that josses canon. Funny as hell. Read first.

Narcissus by Domenika Marzione: "Nobody destroys worlds by accident," Rodney is told early on in his academic career. Gen.

The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves by Smitty: In 1988, Cadet First Class John Sheppard stole a goat. In 2005, Major Lorne steals a Cat-Thing. It turns out that stealing mascots is never as good an idea as one would think.

The Half-Life of Carbon by sheafrotherdon: Rodney's never understood all the fuss about sex. McKay/Sheppard.

Prison Break by liketheriver: When the team becomes trapped in an Ancient prison, it's up to Rodney to bust them out of their individual cells. The problem is, it's all in their minds. Gen.

Breaking Walls by TechnoScribe: Circumstances, and Rodney’s friends, won’t allow him to keep his past a secret anymore. Slightly AU but worth it.

IDIC by jimandblair: It is a matter of the Women of Athos. Or why Teyla wears a wig.

Though much is taken, much abides by jane_lane18: Teyla as a teenager.

The Natural by esteefee: Ronon learns to fly. Gen.

Other Doors, Other Rooms by neevebrody: "It wasn't all fighting, or the military." Ronon said after a while, after long minutes of listening to surf that was loud enough to command attention, but near silent in its beauty. "Sateda was artisans, painters, poets. Our villages had libraries and halls where they kept artifacts – pieces of Sateda's history. Who knows if any of it survived?" Gen.
