Doubts About John

I'm looking for stories where new marines arrive, look at John and think, "That's our CO? You have to be kidding me. I could so take him in a fight." And then later realize that he is the best man for the job. Whether because he kicks their butts in a fight during training, or saves them from being kidnapped.

I'd prefer for it to concentrate on that, so gen is very much prefered, but I won't say no to Mcshep if it fits the requirements.

The first chapter of Revelations and Expectations by Kariesue might work. The first chapter counts as gen, but the story eventually ends up John/Teyla.
The first look the marines get of him is John - with Torren on his lap - rolling down a hallway in Atlantis on a skateboard. The can't quite believe he is military and in no way connect him with their CO, at that point.
