Hi there - I'm looking for stories that focus on the science of the Atlantis expedition: not just the oh-crap-we-have-to-fix-this-or-we-all-die science*, but the holy-shit-this-is-awesome science. The eureka moments, when all the death and destruction and evil space vampires are forgotten because they've discovered something new and exciting that changes the way they see the universe.
After all, that's why they signed up to the expedition...
I'd particularly like stories that aren't just 'Look at this cool Ancient doohickey', but instead look at the process of working out what's actually going on, and the exhilaration of scientific discovery.
Also any stories where the non-scientists get enlightened as to why the scientists are so enthusiastic about their work.
Any characters. Gen or slash or het or femmeslash, all's cool :)
(In case you're wondering, I like science. It works, b*tches :)
*The oh-crap-we-have-to-fix-this-or-we-all-die science is cool, too. We all know how it makes John feel when Rodney's all smart and life-saving ;)

Date: 2011-04-24 01:29 am (UTC)The Secret Life of Scientists (http://yearningvoid.net/stories/julad/000082.html) by julad, Rodney/Radek, ~9150 words
Absurdity Theory (http://yearningvoid.net/stories/julad/000083.html) also by julad, Rodney/Radek, ~10,400 words (lots of serious (ahem) talk about the background science here)

Less with the funny, but good:
Women's Work (http://wickedwords.livejournal.com/488417.html) by wickedwords, Miko/Cadman, ~3300 words. Miko's take on the gene and the city and connection, among other things.
Not so much the science just of the Atlantis expedition, but definitely very much about some of the science of the Stargate program and how Atlantis reacts to it and the process of discovery and creation and monitoring of that scientific progress, both by its builders and its subject:
The Difference Engine (http://sam-storyteller.dreamwidth.org/149077.html) by copperbadge. McShep, ~20,900 words. John died in Afghanistan and then he joined the expedition.

Date: 2011-04-24 03:31 am (UTC)In Antediluvian (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_santa/184338.html) (15.4k, McShep), the expedition discovers a large black cube out in the middle of dead space and goes to investigate. Eerie and intriguing.
In Difficulties in Mathematics (http://archiveofourown.org/works/74786) (14k, I think gen), when they try to open a wormhole to send Jeannie home after "The Shrine", they encounter a very serious and complicated problem that I can't begin to explain but remember being very sciencey. Heh.
And Si Muovo (http://www.trickster.org/kass/SiMuovo.html) is very much an AU — Father Meredith Rodney McKay, SJ, meets bush pilot John "Jack" Sheppard when he's exiled to Alaska — but its Rodney is very much devoted to the exploration of science as an expression of God's majesty, which is an unusual take.

Date: 2011-05-15 09:34 am (UTC)This one is an AU with a magical universe where Rodney has doctorates in physics and magic. He takes a scientific approach to magic. It's not exactly what you asked for, but I thought it was quite fun.
Any Sufficiently Advanced Technology by Quasar
23,273 words. McShep. AU adventure.
