John's not In the Air Force, but Still Makes It to Atlantis

Back again! (I feel like I'm posting every other week >.>)

I'm looking for AUs where John Sheppard isn't in the Air Force, but still manages to hook up with SGC/Rodney, and eventually he makes it to Atlantis. Well, Atlantis, or the SGC starts using him as a human light switch. Either one. Slash (John/Rodney) would be great, but gen would be good, too.

I'm not sure if this meets your search, since Rodney is also not in the SGC but Rheanna's riveting apocafic The Hard Prayer (http://archiveofourown.org/works/3521) get's there in the end. It might be a stretch but is well worth the read, if you haven't seen it already.
