I've been having 'fun' with this one!

My 8yo is a big SGA fan like her older brothers and she asked me if there was any fanfiction she could read, since she knows that I read SGA ff. Most of what I read in SGA is John/Rodney (and preferably loooooong), but now I need to look for short stories suitable for children. She is capable of reading The Hobbit - so reading level is not likely to be a problem - but her emotional age is still only 8, so pairings and violence should be fairly low-key. If you can think of anything suitable I'd be very grateful!

I'm thinking maybe team friendship fics might be where I should look? Or adventure-type stories? Oh and no drunk shenanigans - I'm surprised at how much gen fiction starts with the main characters getting drunk!

Oh - and if you know of any fanfiction archives which are specifically aimed at children that would also be welcome information.

How about The Illustrated Rodneysaur (http://rivatar.com/aa/atlantis/rodneysaur.htm)? There's brief mention of Rodneysaur hiding his head between Teyla's breasts and "John had a perfect view of Rodney's naked ass" but as far as I remember it's otherwise G-rated, and gen. And adorable. :-)

I have absolutly no experience with children so I don't know if these fics are ok or not.

I mainly read John H/C so I don't think that most of my bookmarks are something for an 8-year old but here are some that I think that they should be ok:

The Joys of Rituals by [livejournal.com profile] kriadydragon

Not too Bad, Not too Bad at all by [livejournal.com profile] kriadydragon

Cross into the blue by [livejournal.com profile] harriet_spy (SGA/Temeraire fusion)

Squonksgiving by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper

You could also try the [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon or the [livejournal.com profile] stargategenrec Communities.

Well, I've got this (http://pentapus.livejournal.com/243265.html) (a warning for some illustrated cuteness [puppies!]); this (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/881629.html) (a warning for gratuitous squishing, burning, and decapitating of pinatas; oh, and teamy goodness); this (http://sheafrotherdon.livejournal.com/491415.html) (an adorable fic with Rodney trying to teach Torren how to walk); and this (http://seekergeek.livejournal.com/14583.html) (wherein the 'gate teams compete for the silliest entrance through the 'gate into Atlantis). Hopefully they'll do.

Maybe (most of these are gen or pretty mild pre-slash and humorous, though some may have some swearwords):

Whatever Can Go Wrong (http://www.sholiofic.com/sga/superpowers.shtml) by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper (they get temporary superpowers. oops.)

Power Napping (http://archiveofourown.org/works/2177) by icarus (John has a superpower)

I have a perfect one for a little girl!!! It features an awesome young female O/C and, although it is technically McShep, it's offscreen. Rated PG and seriously, this is GREAT stuff:

There are a lot of great gen stories over at the sga genficathon site,

But one of the best (for a child I think) is Into the Woods by Greyias - http://community.livejournal.com/sga_genficathon/8856.html#cutid1
It's Rodney-centered and it's so funny, it made me laugh and laugh.

I would highly rec everything over there, really! http://community.livejournal.com/sga_genficathon/

Of course you'll probably want to read the fic first to make sure they're appropriate (it's a tough job being a parent ;-) some of the stories are pretty heavy and deal with more mature subject matter - war and violence, things of that sort.

From the author's website - Running on Empty - Sheppard and McKay are captured by Wraith, implanted with trackers and released to run and die - http://www.sholiofic.com/sga/running.shtml

It's a great action/adventure story, but the thing I think your 8-year-old will like best is that Rodney stumbles across a group of kids that take a part in the story.

There are some excellent gen writers on Fanfiction.net. FFN has the advantage that you can set a login for her that only allows K-Teen stories for her view. Please look the stories over for level of violence first,
since most have some hurt/comfort in them.
PS you can also view the favorite authors/stories of these authors to find more.

Oh, one of mine might work: The Numbers Game: or, Atlantis Reads Harry Potter. (http://eccentricweft.dreamwidth.org/1356.html) It's John/Rodney established relationship but extremely low-key. Rodney engages in a series of trades to get a copy of the last Harry Potter book for John, because he thinks John needs some escapist reading. At the very end they're in bed together, Rodney with his laptop and John engrossed in his book. :)

Sounds like you've got tons of suggestions but I'll add one that I enjoyed immensely and nearly fell over laughing from. There's Once Upon a Time (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/500267.html) by [livejournal.com profile] ellex42. Rodney tells a story to some children while waiting for the Daedalus to pick them up. This had me laughing like crazy with a wonderful Rodney voice and children interaction. The fic seemed pretty low key so I'm think it might be OK for an 8 year old.

"The Cubs Side of the Mountain" (http://www.members.tripod.com/trekslasher/) g to pg-13 stories, artwork. Star Trek the Original Series and the latest movie. Spock/McCoy focus. I haven't gone through to see which ones of all those listed there would be suitable for an eight year old but there are lots of stories available there.

If you don't mind the self pimping, I've got a few kid-friendly ones.

Climb: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4016145/1/Climb
Climbing is a thinking kid's sport. And guess who that "thinking kid" was. (Features young Rodney, young Jeannie and someone else we might know...)

Modern Major Scientist: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4374572/1/Modern_Major_Scientist
Rodney hasn't slept in three days. He's a bit... loopy. And sing-y. Originally posted at sgaflashfic for the animal, vegetable or mineral challenge.

Four Times Ronon Usurped Rodney's Dessert (And One Time He Didn't):
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4476633/1/Four_Times_Ronon_Usurped_Rodneys_Dessert

Scenes From a Mall: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4906342/1/Scenes_From_a_Mall
The team at a Colorado shopping mall.

All should be fine for an 8-year-old. There might be minor swear words, though. If that's an issue, you might want to give them a quick glance first.

This is awesome!

I too have an eight-year-old daughter who loves fanfic for SGA and SGC-1!

It was a fantastic question, and I'm sure they'll be fics here that she'll love, too.

Thanks for posting!
