So I was on Stargate Wikia

and I saw that McKay was actually born in 1968 while John was born in 1970 - which actually jarred me because fandom has always made John be older.

So...

1. Are there any fics that reference the fact that Rodney is actually two years older than John?

2. Fics that talk about characters' star signs?

3. And fics in which Rodney is a lot older than John. Not John being underage - but just fics in which there is a significant age gap between them.

eta: Wikia could be lying? Confirmed that there hasn't been any mention of John/Rodney's date of birth/ages and the place Wikia gets is information isn't clearly cited, but you know... I'm still craving for younger-than-Rodney!John

Randomly, it's interesting you looked that up, but I don't think that the years they were born are canon (mentioned on the show?). However, fandom may have decided to make John older because Joe Flanigan is older than David Hewlett.

I think it just shows how good I am at procrastination really XD... and there's a lot of info there that isn't mentioned on the show, but they all reference this DVD of some sort, some kind of SGA special feature one? And yeah - since in the Wikia site John as born in June 14 and Joe is born on January and John in fic is usually born in January I'd realized, and I was pretty happy with that before I saw the Wikia article on John, which has a lot of insights on his character which are quite cool.

Actually, their age was never mentioned in canon, and that's why, basically, we have DH and JF actual age difference.

So is the Wikia one just speculation? 'Cause they're all talking about this DVD that apparently contained all this SGA information I'd never heard of before and I kind of want to watch it.

Also for some reason it took three seconds for me to suddenly be so in love with the idea of John being younger than Rodney. I think it may actually be "Teenage Kicks" that set it off originally but fhjghfjhjdgf

I've never heard of any special DVD with this information. Plus, a lot of the info on Sheppard from StargateWiki is really written before the Season 4 reveal, that's why we still have this fact about Sheppard where he can do complicated math equations in his head. Which is clearly fanon based. He can do math (see 'Rising') but not 'complicated math equations'.

Hmm. I know a lot of SGA is mostly fanon-based (it's actually one of the things I love about it - it's like universe building, and I think the writers do a great job building the characters from the stray bits and pieces we get on a mostly action-focused show), branching off from the small tidbits revealed in the show, so I'm not surprised that it isn't canon - most things that don't have to do with Rodney (who I think we know most about canonically) aren't. Thank you for clarifying this. :D

I have no idea about John's age. Like most people (I assume), I always think of John as a year or two older than Rodney since Joe is a little over a year older than David.

However, Rodney's birth year is canon. 1968. If you'll recall Quarantine, it's part of his password: 16431879196842 (Isaac Newton's birth year, Albert Einstein's birth year, Rodney's birth year, and the answer to the ultimate question)

I think fandom makes John older because Joe Flanigan is one year older than David Hewlett. On the show, I'm pretty sure we've never been given a year of birth for John while Rodney's year of birth is canon from Quarantine.
