Here's my rec for Unnatural Selection (http://almostnever.livejournal.com/709130.html) by auburnnothenna. It's a long story with a lot going on in it, and mind the warnings because a lot of it is intense. But it has a lot of this aspect in it. Near the beginning, Rodney complains like a hypochondriac, but he keeps working with raw-burned fingers; later Rodney behaves scornfully toward John, but John suspects his attraction to Rodney is mutual.
