[identity profile] kuhekabir.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] sgarecfinders
Hi,
I am new and looking for McShep.

Stories should be long and as long as there is a happy ending it can have any topic. And I would prefer if the focus would be on Shepard.

Thank you.

Welcome to the goodness that is SGA fic. :)
First, a quick recommendation that you look through the entries at this comm that use the tags "classics/favorites (http://community.livejournal.com/sgagenrefinders/tag/classics%2Ffavorites)" (paying particular attention to the McShep (http://community.livejournal.com/sgagenrefinders/tag/.%20mckay%2Fsheppard) requests in there) -- you'll find a lot of previously recced greatness that fits what you're looking for that way.
TBC...

(My second comment wouldn't post the first few times I hit submit either -- especially not as a reply to my first comment; what's up with that?) *looks confused*

Whoa yes, it just took 5 minutes to update a few words in one of my old posts! So far, results of recent LJ maintenance: not impressive... To add to trauma, AO3 down for maintenance! Whatever shall we read? ;) (Thank goodness for saved copies of classic fics.)

Second, a very few of the wealth of rec-lists and McSheppy fandom primers to get you started some more:
- And then, randomly, there was a McShep Primer on your flist (http://bookshop.livejournal.com/958654.html) by [livejournal.com profile] bookshop
- The SGA Project 2006, aka Flavor of the Year (http://www.icarus.slashcity.net/essays/sgaproject2006.html) by [livejournal.com profile] icarusancalion
- Primer for Reading SGA Fanfic (when you haven't seen a single episode of the show) (http://community.livejournal.com/rec_room/248780.html) by [livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow
- [livejournal.com profile] astridv's posts of SGA recs, sorted by length, all indicating pairings (if any, many McShep): part I (http://astridv.livejournal.com/95756.html), part II (http://astridv.livejournal.com/120953.html), and part III (http://astridv.livejournal.com/160769.html)
- McKay/Sheppard fiction rec list (http://deltacephei.livejournal.com/1866.html) by [livejournal.com profile] deltacephei (sorted by category, all indicate length)
- McShep romance recs (http://fiordeligi.livejournal.com/6570.html) by [livejournal.com profile] fiordeligi

Like some of the writers of the excellent primers/reclists above, there are two McShep essential-reading classics that I recommend not reading too quickly/saving until you've read a hundred or so other McShep classics, as they'll have more impact if you wait:
- Image (http://synecdochic.dreamwidth.org/profile)synecdochic (http://synecdochic.dreamwidth.org/)'s Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose (http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/sga/freedoms_just_another_word.html)-verse -- story has an amazing vid by Lim ("This Is How It Works") (http://www.kekkai.org/lim/index.html#tihiw), and an official sequel (http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/sga/and_the_bands_playing.html) and unofficial prequel (http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/sga/stonemasons_buildings.html) (Note for this one: the ending is not traditionally happy, but it is past McShep, it is a great story, and the surviving partner is surprisingly good at being happy despite the loss.)
- [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza's Victors-verse main story (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Victors.html) and additions (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/victorsverse.html)

Self-pimp alert: most of the above are also (along with other reclists and resources and a few of my own recs for McShep and non-McShep fics), collected in my (Newer) SGA fic readers guide (http://skaredykat.livejournal.com/1083.html) for easy reference.

Happy reading :)

You might want to take a look at [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match, which has challenges going back several years. Caution: not all of the stories have happy endings so read the warnings carefully. [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa has a lot of McShep stories also going back several years. Check the masterlists for pairings and the stories for warnings.

Welcome and happy reading!

Second the pointers and the note about warnings on these comms. There's also the SGA Big Bang archive (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=pairings) (2007-2009) and its successor Atlantis Big Bang (2010, A03 temporarily down so can't point you to the Works list right this minute), where all the stories are 40,000+ words (many are many more), the majority are McShep, of those most are happy ending, and there was a recent wistful note that more of them are John-focused than Rodney-focused...

Ahem, the SGA Big Bang archive that [livejournal.com profile] jane_connor (whose recs, for those stories in her comment that I've read I also second) already pointed you to above, oops! :)

You're welcome. :)

SGA is an excellent fandom. Welcome!

(Fair Trade has a sequel, Mobius. Be sure to read it too!)

Let me try this once more with corrected spelling....

So many favorites... :P

I don't see "Indelible" (http://shaenie.livejournal.com/332275.html) by [livejournal.com profile] shaenie listed yet. If you haven't read it, you definitely should. It's a little over 129,000wds.

I would also second (or is it third?) the recommendation to check out the SGABigBang Challenge results -- linked in [livejournal.com profile] jane_connor's earlier post -- one of my favorite things about this particular archive is its sortability for pairings, years, etc.

Another good resource is The Giant McShep AU List (http://www.squidge.org/GiantMcShepAUList/the-actual-list/) compiled by [livejournal.com profile] elderwitty & [livejournal.com profile] anonymoouse with help from many other people. Seriously....take a look-see through there, the AU's in this fandom are extraordinary. Word Counts can be found next to each title; and while the list shows the occupation each of John & Rodney, the list is primarily sorted by John's occupation.

Welcome & Happy Reading! :D

I can't seem to get the Giant McShep AU List to work.
Is there a problem or is it just me?

It's working fine for me.

Sometimes there's just a hang-up on Squidge.org's end of things, so if you give it a little while, it should be good. :D

I'm certainly not a newbie to SGA stories, but it's great to see all of these ideas grouped together and I think there's even a few I haven't read!
Really glad the request was posted and really happy to see all the recs by you guys. You guys are the best!!!
