We all know John Sheppard is depicted as an exceptional pilot, but not many people write about any other training he might have had.

I would love some recs of stories that are about or just talk about, flashbacks even, John's military training/record before Antarctica/Atlantis. Was he special forces? special ops? special tactics?

No ship necessary, although I love a good McShep.

It's worth it. She's one of the few writers in the fandom with a good grasp of military stuff, and doesn't just perpetuate mistakes made by the screenwriters.

Pretty much everything Kiera Marcos writes fits the bill--her site is www.kieramarcos.com.

I second the rec of miss porcupine's stuff.

Yeah, I like that one...her Sentinels of Atlantis, Ties that Bind, and the new one she's working on (can't recall the name right now) are also really great.

Perhaps my favorite of [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine's is "Custer's Last Stand" (http://www.offpanel.net/dmz/sga/custer.html) & its mini-sequel "Royal Jelly" (http://miss-porcupine.livejournal.com/196178.html#cutid1), where the Atlantis Military find out that Sheppard is not the expected by-product of the Air Force. (As a side-note & warning for the latter link, once you get to the separator line, that's the end of that little bit, since below that is a completely different story. Also.... No Pairings)

Another common BadAss!John series is by [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley: "Five People John Sheppard Didn't Kill on P11-23R" (http://smiley.zonezine.net/html/33676.html), which has a sequel Snippet (http://smiley.zonezine.net/html/86142d.html). (McShep Pairing)

Perhaps one of my favorite John-goes-around-the-bend stories, which showcases a probably Spec. Ops background, is "An Ever-Fixed Mark" (http://www.thestade.com/khk15.html) by K Hanna Korossy -- it is an excellent character study of John, Rodney, John & Rodney's friendship, & even the interaction /friendship of the team, which has Ford on it, at the time of this story. (No Pairings)

"More Than Meets the Eye" (http://wildcat88.livejournal.com/12217.html) by [livejournal.com profile] wildcat88 makes mention of Sheppard most likely having a Spec. Ops background....from the POV of Lorne. (No Pairings)

Although, there is no discussion about John's past back Op's background, in “End Game” (http://kristen999.livejournal.com/261774.html) by Kristen999, John uses traps and military tactics to stop an 'unbeatable' enemy and is very badassed!

Gen and team. John centric.

Judas Doesn't Answer (http://www.eternalvox.net/auburn/judasdoesn'tanswer.html) by [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna addresses John's special ops training and makes use of it in a long sequence as part of a murder/thriller plot.

Oh and: that story has multiple pairings, het and slash.
