I just discovered the Marines To The Rescue! series by
crimsonclad and it sparked the desire to read some things with similar themes-
1) A character who, in real life, would really make you wonder about their sanity. Yes, I'm asking for fics where the main character is crazy. Whether its lighthearted and funny like the series above or taken seriously, like a case of schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder, I just want to see the cast deal with it. While the serious take does interest me, I do not want dark!fics here.
2) In the last fic of the series, These Are The Real Patriots, the marines, one in particular, pretend to act in the most unsavory way that is all too common in fraternal cultures. The point here being that it is pretend. I would like to read some fic where the military contingent on Atlantis are shown as intelligent, liberal, educated men and women. I can't imagine they really would have been let off-world without being extremely open minded. Perhaps situations where the marines surprise scientists or civilians (back on earth) by acting the exact opposite of what would be expected when confronted with a sensitive issue, the repeal of DADT, or anything else.
3) Pretty much anything that features the marines/military contingent as a whole acting in concert to achieve something.
My main pairing is McShep (I'd love some more of the marine's outside pov on McShep) but I read almost any slash pairing and gen would be ok, too (though please note pairing if there is one). Het and femmeslash are acceptable in the background. I have no preference for canon versus AU so anything goes, same with rating. Thank you!

Date: 2010-04-26 11:46 am (UTC)For a cracky take on 2, Lorne is Air Force, not Marine Corps, but he's good about remembering team anniversaries and such in All The Hot Teams Are Doing It (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_santa/238226.html) by whizzy. Eventual OT4 after John learns that all the rest of the SGC has been leading a more liberal lifestyle than he has.

2. Chuck is Candian Forces, not US Marine Corps, but he gives John an educated, realistic take on DADT repeal in With Appreciation (http://community.livejournal.com/mcsmooch/118690.html) by

For 3, they don't always all act in concert, but check out Domenika Marzione/
Many stories in the Atlantis secedes (http://www.ratcreature.net/fannish_stuff/sga_thematiclist_atlantiscutoff.php#independence) genre (http://community.livejournal.com/sgagenrefinders/tag/colonization/secession/earth%20lost) also feature the marines/Atlantis military contingent acting in concert.

Also for 1 but on the cracky end, The Roads Never Lead Where They're Supposed to Go (http://dejabu.robot-army.org/sgaroads.html) by eleveninches. AU, underappreciated Rodney and surfer-botanist John clean up after someone on the expedition's mental health issues. McShep.

Date: 2010-04-27 12:19 am (UTC)I had read the first of the sock puppet series but never knew of the others so that was an especially lovely treat. I have actually been avoiding the Sentinels of Atlantis series because I grew to dislike her WMHB series (blasphemy, I know) but I will have to give it a shot. The Difference Engine has been on my to-read list for some time, I admit, so now I really need to bump it up. Thanks again for such a plethora of lovely recs!

Date: 2010-04-27 02:41 pm (UTC)Yeah, altho' it seems she's become as canonized as Xanthe before her, not everyone enjoys the increasingly-extreme fantasies. However, while I haven't read all the episodes of The Sentinels of Atlantis I did enjoy the ones I've read. Just go into them realizing that they don't follow either canon, & check out her Cast of Characters on the index page (a few are different actors than in canon).

In terms of style etc., Sentinels of Atlantis is very much
