Somewhere in the Farm in Iowa series, it's mentioned in passing that John wears his uniform and gives a speech at the VFW every year, but it isn't exactly a theme.

There's a fic, I can't remember the name, where Rodney is an FBI agent (Ronon's his partner) and John has PTSD and was almost raped by Cowen-the-porn-king's thugs.

OOH! That reminds me of another one by elayna88, who goes by master elayna at Area 52. In The Neighborly Detective And The Tragic Woobie Widower, John is a veteran who's now a cop, partnered with Ronon. Also working in his precinct are Lorne and Ford. He moves next door to McKay and his adorable son Timothy, and ...well, you can imagine. There's no mention of Veterans' Day, but John is ex-Air Force. There are four or five sequels - next story is linked at the bottom of the current one.
