Not Themselves
Oct. 21st, 2009 07:32 pmHello, I have a hankering for stories where a character is not themselves. Like say for instance, Rodney is zapped
by alien technology that suddenly makes him nice. The effects can be brought on by alien technology, drugging, alien food etc.

Date: 2009-10-24 03:01 am (UTC)Hrm. There's one where a character is literally not themselves: Repellent (http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=13182&textsize=0&chapter=1), by Neena, in which Rodney literally ceases to appear to others as he should - very cool premise.
In mirabile_dictu's the Topography of Heaven (http://mirabile-dictu.livejournal.com/41671.html), it's not that Rodney changes so quickly; it's more that it seems so to his teammates, who cannot visit him for long intervals. But I remember being struck by that aspect of it: although we see the process Rodney goes through in order to change, John and Rodney's other teammates don't. As I recall, John considers new!Rodney a little weird and is generally unhappy about it...
Stick Around (http://hl2.bappy.com/SGA_SA.html), by Mahoney, has Sheppard hanging off the edge of a cliff, and Rodney holding on. Until John starts to lose it.
Heart of Ice (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/760964.html) by Crysothermis, might be one of the closest to your request: "We find that love tends to interfere with a person's ability to make a useful contribution to society.... Those who are motivated only by pleasure and pain are more . . . predictable." "Okay, now, as a philosophy of life? That is seriously disturbing."
In Betrayal (http://www.panopeeper.com/raven/StargateAtlantis/Betrayal%20(1).htm), (Almost) the whole base is taken over by an evil-overlord-type. Rodney is tortured by John, and his scientists sent through a space-'gate. Good story, great John-angst, but Rodney is a bit too well-adjusted for my tastes.
Oooh, a shiver-inducing one of the same stripe is Seperis's I Hear and Forget (http://seperis.livejournal.com/536445.html). There is an alien takeover, but for some reason John and Samantha aren't affected. This isn't as much in their favor as you'd think. Harrowing, shiver-inducing, and near-perfect in execution.
The one I thought of first, though it took me a bit to find the title is the Ratio of Burning (http://stillane.killerstar.net/stories/ratio.html), by stillane. The Yolen return Rodney *wrong* - polite, helpful, willing to work - like a sleepwalker. Needless to say, his team is helplessly infuriated, trying to get Rodney back to his former self.
On a similar note, As You Wish (http://www.pertifity.com/fanfic/asyouwish1.htm) gives Rodney a magical bracelet on the planet of the blissful hippies that makes him want to fulfill John's every whim.
....or you could just check out my delicious tag for drugged (http://delicious.com/Kirinin/sga+drugged), possession (http://delicious.com/Kirinin/sga+possession)... they broke Rodney! (http://delicious.com/Kirinin/sga+theybrokerodney!"), or they broke John! (http://delcious.com/Kirinin/sga+theybrokejohn!)... or Aliens Made Them Do It (http://delicious.com/Kirinin/sga+amtdi). They will indubitably have a lot of what you're looking for.
