Okay,
I am totally in lust with
jssangel 's Ring-Eye arc jssangel.livejournal.com/28067.html as such, I want more!!!!
I sat, reading through it all and now am sitting here going "But!!! There's SO much More!" to what's been laid out.
So, dear Genre finders, I throw myself on your mercy.
I am looking for fics in 4 basic categories:
1) Fics dealing with the lack of population in Pegasus, and the cultures and ideas that would spring from this. Specifically any mention of new genes like John and Rodney's being prizes to be traded carefully. Bonus if it deals with the Matriarical ideas played at briefly in some of the different societies they visit. (IE 1/2 the cultures seem to be Women lead/ Foster on strong women)
2) Ronon looking at Atlantis and not understanding how totally backwards the people are (to him). What they assume is basic, and what he assumes is basic, are totally different things. Really want to see culture play here, Sateda is a totally different world from Atlantis, from Earth. What, why, how, what rules of life are set in stone for him that Earthers totally misinterpret? Visa Versa? I want to really see more on this.
3) Any fic that covers Ring-Eyes or Blue eyes being a sought after commodity in Pegasus. Hells. Any fic where people are enraptured by eyes period. 'Cause I notice eyes in people all the time and this is almost a kink for me after reading the Ring Eye stuff.(So Many Blue Eyed Folks!!! WHEEE!)
4) Any fic that deals with gate translations vs what is really said. I adore the idea of "Home Words", IE: Pegasus Galaxy (Flying Burden-Beast Dense Cluster of Stars) being something that people in Pegasus pick up on and listen closely for, but Atlanteans just assume is formal speech or odd slang- translating it to a familiar mental image without thinking about it. Or what it might mean happens to their speech.
1000 internets if someone can give me something along the lines of Ring Eye fic, that mixes any of the above together with #1 and deals with the reaction to the fact 6 billion people live on Earth alone. Oh the Reactions!
Or, Yanno, Cultural Anthro!Porn. Of any type.looks shifty

The gate translators stop working, leaving Teyla isolated within Atlantis. There's a lovely idea where the author proposes that Teyla's formal speech patterns are caused by the translator, and that when people speak English she hears grammatically perfect sentences with no contractions etc.

:) I skimmed, and that's *exactly the type of thing I'm looking for. Anything dealing with the idea of the translators and their effects.

Author's summary: He wondered if this was how it felt to go crazy -- you didn't lose your mind, it just stopped synching up with the world around you. The Pegasus galaxy makes Rodney an expert in what he can survive without.
I'd also second the rec for In the City of Seven Walls (mentioned below). Definitely watch the warnings, but there's some clever language stuff in that fic, including the use of a slave sign language in the second half. I will always have a soft spot for this fic as it got me into the SGA fandom. It was the first fic I read, before I'd seen any episodes of the show - what a way to start!
Also? Rebuilding Babel is one of the best.
Date: 2009-08-18 03:26 am (UTC)It was, really awesome, and I fangirled on it so hard last night.
Thank you for bringing it to me, because I so needed it, and it made me cry, in good ways.

Date: 2009-08-16 11:14 pm (UTC)Poor John and Rodney... I won't spoil it, but, the ending about Killed me.
No really. My heart beat once to the side hard, and stopped. I couldn't decide if I wanted to sob or kill. Or both. Then, the very end. *wibbles* *tries not to spoilerific*
somewhere out there

These are all long and imho very satisfying.
Remembering and looking for a story that grabs the issue of the Stargate an an active translator and runs with it, I found this (http://www.ratcreature.net/fannish_stuff/sga_thematiclist_aliens.php) list by ratcreature. You might find something there. The story I was going to rec you is Pegasus Literature 101 (Pass/Fail Remix) (http://community.livejournal.com/remixredux08/19504.html) by
On the issue of anthro!porn (which I looove) lots of stories in this fandom has small gold nuggets of it. Many authors return to it in almost all their stories, though it's not the main focus of the story. If this is what you want, start by reading anything by Punk (http://home.teleport.com/~punkm/sga.html), she's especially good at it.
Uhm, you win lots of internets.

Thank you! scurries off to read and revel in more goodies
