I don't know how closely this fits with your search, but it has Teyla improving herself and becoming MORE than just the diplomat on SGA-1.
Never Stop Moving (http://megtipper.tripod.com/neverstop.htm). It starts on some kind of hovercraft, which has sustained damage, and Teyla gets frustrated because she can't help fix the thing. She starts feeling kind of stupid and useless because she doesn't have the technical skills, so she ends up learning. At one point she even helps Rodney fix a jumper that has been damaged while John and Ronon are both severly injured, and they're being hunted by a bunch of people.
By the same author, The Black Lake (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_genficathon/56512.html). I just rec'd this at ficrec in the Jennifer Keller category, but Teyla gets to be frikking awesome in it, too, and does amazing feats. (I tagged it with 'girl power' *g*)
Refugees in Rivertown (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_genficathon/38647.html) she's kickass even while severely injured and separated from her team.
Recently from the gen ficathon: The ATA Affair has a very kick-ass Teyla as a spy by xparrot. http://community.livejournal.com/sga_genficathon/38903.html
Here's another Teyla story, not a happy fic but one that really stayed with me: The Choices That Damn Us (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_genficathon/48283.html) by Jem
It's a fairly dark and scarily believable AU in which our beloved gatev'erse has made a few fatally wrong turns in the past. Teyla is absolutely fantastic in it.
