Grief

Hi guys,

Anyone know of any good fics in which one or more team members is grieving? The grief can be about a person, an animal, the loss of the city.... anything.

An h/c component would be great but not required. Also, I know it sounds contrary to my request, but I would really prefer no death fics in which a main team member dies... unless said team member isn't really dead and there's a happy reunion-type ending.

Gen, het, slash, whatever. Just please note which is which. Even if I don't read, I'm sure others will appreciate the recs.

Thank you.

I'm not sure this fits the bill, and I should apologize that the first thing that popped into my mind was my own fic (written as Leah), but you might like my Scruffy AI (http://leahwoof.livejournal.com/23609.html#cutid1) series. I've linked you to the notes page of the first fic, because it has links to all the other stories. There is grief of one sort or another in all of them, but I promise that the deaths aren't permanent.

The stories are AU and McShep, with some other pairings mentioned.

Not sure just what versions of grieving you would prefer -- there are lots of forms, of course. Here are a few I've tagged that I think would fit:

The Secret Life of Scientists (http://yearningvoid.net/stories/julad/000082.html). McKay/Zelenka. Has a few scenes dealing with death or anticipated death.

City of Sorrows (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4165679/1/City_of_Sorrows) (gen) is more a sort of PTSD/depression breakdown than strict grief, but it might fit for you.

Why Are You Here (http://community.livejournal.com/physics_flyboys/8636.html) (gen?) does not meet your "no permanent major-character death" criterion, but someone following this posting might appreciate it.

Freedom's Just Another Word (http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/sga/freedoms_just_another_word.html), of course -- subtle grief throughout. Mention of McKay/Sheppard but functionally gen.

And Glory Has No End, or Clementine (http://rinsbane.livejournal.com/64192.html). McKay/Sheppard; grief over leaving Atlantis.

As [livejournal.com profile] dewey3067 below notes, I kinda failed to note that "Freedom" is also major-character-death. Sorry if you got taken by surprise on that.

You should note that Freedom's Just Another Word is very much a deathfic of a major character. But a story that should not be missed. Simply gorgeous story.

Who's Left and Who's Leaving, by the_drifter http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/663538.html
gen - though it can also be read as very pre-slash mcshep. Some expedition members stay in pegasus by faking their own deaths. It doesn't QUITE answer who's faked or not... but the main impacting ones are faked. Very angsty John & Rodney

you might also want to check out the [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic Ways to Die Challenge, which has numerous angsty fics both with and without death (see warnings for each)

A few more:

In the Greenwood Shade (http://crimsonclad.livejournal.com/124006.html). McKay/Sheppard. Rodney is lost when Sheppard disappears, so he naturally assumes the talking frog is a hallucination. This one's a little weird -- fairy tale style.

Both Rebuilding Babel (http://fiercelydreamed.talkoncorners.net/main/archives/stargate-atlantis/rebuilding-babel/) (McKay/Sheppard) and The Seat of Talents (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_genficathon/21610.html) (gen) involve Rodney having to deal with personal losses.

If you don't mind self-pimping, I think my The Undone Years (http://vain-glorious.livejournal.com/23773.html) fits that description, especially the part about about no actual death. Just the opposite. I called it hetty gen or genish het.
