Yes, okay, there are probably thousands of fics where John teaches Rodney to shoot and it turns into happy PWP smut.  However, that's not what I'm looking for.  I am looking for Rodney realizing, quite early in his time in Atlantis, on his own steam and for his own various reasons (self-preservation likely being one of them) that he needs to learn A) how to shoot, B) some hand-to-hand, and/or C) basic wilderness survival (any one or all three, whatever).

I specifically would like John to be the one teaching him, though others helping out are okay too.  Doesn't have to be McShep, gen is fine, but please don't pair him with anyone else.

The real defining characteristic I'm hoping for is a look into how Rodney learns things, how he assimilates new information, when it isn't the usual classroom thing, and it is physical.  He's an engineer and used to getting his hands dirty, apparently, so muscle memory is not foreign to him.  And he's a grade-A genius.  I'd like to see how all that plays out when he's breaking down a Beretta, or learning the physics of judo, or figuring out how to field-dress and roast Beast-of-the-Week.

Thanks!

Ronon teaches Rodney how to fight

I'll be interested to see what kind of response you get. What you are looking for may not exist. In the meantime this one has a tiny bit.

A Little Learning by Lacey McBain might fit the bill.

This one (http://jennytork.livejournal.com/426618.html) has the right motivation, but not so much about the learning process itself ....

I KNOW I didn't make this one up.

At the end of one story, Lorne brings Sheppard to the firing/shooting range and there's McKay, teaching himself how to fire from a book. Lorne tells him -- and this is a near-as-I-can-remember-it quote:

"He's here every night. And he's careful -- he stays with just one kind of gun until he's mastered it, before he moves on."

Your request brought it to mind, and of course now I can't find it to save my life. But I swear, I didn't make it up!

Care in the Holding by Lacey McBain
Everything comes down to the weight of a gun in his hand.
http://www.stickymanpress.mediawood.net/careintheholding.html

It's intense and McShep. How to handle a firearm is not the only thing Rodney learns.
