Hey  you all. :)  I hope what I'm looking for makes sense.  I just read Sardonic Smiley's And You Loathe The Ground, and as some of you may know, I love Rodney owies and much, much comfort and protectiveness from Sheppard or Ronon.  I suppose what I'm looking for is something similar or close in length to SS' story.  Also, I would like something similar to her story in that it also has that way of going beyond that line that the tv shows tended to stay away from.  Confusing, I know.  It just seems that there are so many moments in fic where they come right up to the worst scenerio (ex. Rodney's hand being chopped off, driven insane, etc.)....and then the team magically appears just in time.  That's my best example.  I sort of felt that in Smiley's story, she tried at least a little to go over that unseen line and let Rodney actually be hurt...like what would probably happen in reality, rather than in a tv show that has to stay fluffy and light.  My only about face is that with all the terrible things that can go wrong, I'd like a happy ending for everyone, and some good romance of the mcshep or mcdex kind. ;)

If I need to clarify a little more lemme know.  I think I confused myself.

Oh!  And I'd kindly like a favor from you wonderful people.  I've been going through the Big Bang fic, but I seem to have trouble feeling out which stories are better suited to those that like a lot of Rodney wuv and booboos.  Could anyone point me to some of them?  I'd greatly appreciate it.

I've never read the story you mentioned. Can you give me the gist of what it's about? That might help me get a better understanding of what you're looking for.

Well the gist is that the team finds a kidnapped Rodney in an alien experimental lab. And unlike in other situations where they've arrived just in time to prevent what's going to happen, they actually don't. What the scientists were trying to do to Rodney was already done before they'd arrived. Much, much later. When Rodney has gotten used to what the scientists did to him, some freaky offworld farmer occultists take Rodney's new, um, upgrades as a sign that he has a demon. Before any of his team can do anything (they're restrained) Rodney goes through this traumatizing removal of the upgrades...which he'd come to kinda like. Does that help any? It just seems like there is a lot out there that will take you right up to where something horrible is going to happen...and then it doesn't. Weird, though, cause I want a happy ending and no dead!Rodney, and Sardonic Smiley did it. :) All in a wonderfully long plot. This help much? I hope, but feel free to ask some more. Thanks for that! I think I get what you're going for. I tried thinking of some fics that I enjoy that might fit your criteria. You may or may not know them all, but they're always worth a reread in my opinion. :)

But Never The Nights (http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=4627&warning=12) by lavvyan -- Where Rodney is culled but lives, and Atlantis believes him to be dead. Nothing really horrible or torturous happens, but Rodney is alone (and very ill at one point) and trying to survive for 5 months, while John is angsting terribly over his "death." The angst is more in the emotion of the characters, rather than physical trauma.

Critical Error (http://www.davidhewlett.co.uk/fiction/viewstory.php?sid=92) by Tarlan -- Where during "Critical Mass" the episode, Atlantis doesn't discover Caldwell is a Goa'uld in time. This story includes rape and torture, though I can't recall how vivid they are. It's more than just mentioned, though.

Side Effects (http://www.area52hkh.net/asj/jelliot/seffects.php) by Jane Elliot -- I don't really consider this mpreg, but some do. Technically Rodney becomes impregnated with a clone, and has it aborted. Because of that, he goes through some pretty awful side effects, physical and mental.

Theory of Everything (http://rheanna27.livejournal.com/68371.html) by rheanna27 -- Rodney uses a device to increase his intelligence, but then it begins to strip it away, and quickly. (Written before "The Shrine.")

Rodney is by far my favorite character, but if you ever want to read a story that fits your description but in which the bad stuff happens to John, try Fading Skies (http://www.panopeeper.com/raven/StargateAtlantis/FadingSkies/FadingSkiesTable.htm) by Diamond Raven -- AU, wherein John becomes paralyzed from the waist down and he and Rodney have to learn to deal with that. Such a fabulous story.

I like fiercelydreamed's stuff because she often goes the distance and doesn't pull any punches, but still ends her stories with hope.

The longest/whumpiest Rodney fic I ever read was Possession (http://gategeeks.livejournal.com/17741.html) by Gategeeks. The beginning of this fic has the team discovering a creepy Ancient lab where experiments are conducted on non-ATA carriers. Rodney (because his ATA gene is artificial) and Teyla are trapped in the lab and the team frantically try to convince the sentient lab systems to free them. I was on the edge of my seat just hoping that they would be freed, and well, it doesn't exactly go too well - and that's just the premise!

All through this fic the team are trying to help/save Rodney but they are always one step behind. It's a gen fic so there's no romance (sorry!) but plenty of H/C.

Be warned, this is a very long and rather brutal fic that doesn't exactly have a happy ending! There is a promised sequel that has been in the works for quite a while, and the authors have recently said they are still working on it. Very well written and I think it fits your request.

The over-the-line fic I thought of first is vain_glorious' story The Light of Compassion. It's not Rodney-centric and it's gen, with over-the-line stuff happening to every member of the team. Warning for character deaths and the ending is not exactly happy, but it's happy in comparison to the rest of it.

Hard to believe that no-one's yet mentioned Permutationality (http://smiley.zonezine.net/html/62850.html), in which Rodney is captured by the Wraith. Things get pretty dark before they begin to look up again. Even though Rodney is never seriously injured... I don't know if I could have survived what his character did.

Plus, this is a just-plain-brilliant look at the Wraith.
