Shakespeare SGA Style
May. 2nd, 2009 09:15 amI just finished teaching Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to a bunch of bored high school students. As usual, they couldn’t figure out why they were being ‘forced’ to read a play by ‘some dead guy’ or how it had any impact on their lives, etc. So, after a lengthy explanation/discussion of Shakespeare and his works, they were left with hopefully a better understanding of why teachers put them through such an ordeal and me wondering if there are any SGA stories based on Shakespeare’s plays or sonnets.
Are there any?
I don’t care about pairings, etc. Load me up.
Thanks guys! :o)

OTOH, I wonder if you wouldn't be better off using a different tactic with your class. Great literature is all about the plot and the play of words. Being confronted by both is a lot for most students (as you learned when they tuned you out under the convenient defence mechanism of boredom). What if you were to ask your class (in teams) to write their own adaptation of R&J. What would they consider to be the most unyielding barriers (religion, race, politics, etc.) to prevent two people from just being able to love without their families or other controlling organisations interfering.

Date: 2009-05-04 02:56 am (UTC)Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not shy about reccing my writing. But, in the context of a high school teacher in the States dealing with material that has same-sex ... sex, I'm just being wary.
::moar giggles::
Thank you for your explicit endorsement of my writing.
::puffs out chest in pride::
I guess that makes me a very happy camper today.
And any day that I get lovely praise.
BTW ... your icon = major guh!

Date: 2009-05-04 01:37 pm (UTC)Heh, well, a public-school teacher in the US would never be allowed to introduce his/her students to fanfic of any persuasion, so you wouldn't need to worry about that. I still maintain the teacher him/herself would know what's likely to be in store. You might appreciate this: my dearest friend
