Hi guys,

I usually just read gen, but now I've started to give slash a go. Between Rodney and John.
Can anyone give me any good fic's which, while are slash, have a good plot.. maybe the relationship isn't the sole focus of the fic? Take the_drifter's Rebuliding Babel for example.
Or just your all time favourite Rodney/John fics?

Thanks!

You've probably read/seen/heard of this one, but the first thing that comes to mind when I think of great fics that also happen to be McKay/Shepperd is Written By the Victors (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Victors.html) by [livejournal.com profile] cesperenza. I think it's the best fic I've read in the fandom.

If you don't mind AUs, I recently read A Clear and Different Light (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=53) by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper and [livejournal.com profile] naye, which has a really awesome plot and some McShep. (In fact, I would recommend checking out all the McShep fics on SGA Big Bang (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=pairings&id=1), since they tend to be long and plotty.)

My all-time favorite John/Rodney is [livejournal.com profile] astolat's A Beautiful Lifetime Event (http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/stargate/lifetime_event.html), in which they accidentally activate an Ancient baby-making machine, have to raise the kid, and then somehow find the time to fall in love. (Okay, I'm kind of lame like that.)

Right now, I also love 17.5: A Love Story (http://www.helenish.net/17point5.shtml) by Helen (http://www.helenish.net/).

Anything by [livejournal.com profile] eleveninches is hysterical; if you know SG1, you should try out There's No Such Thing As Daniel Jackson (http://eleveninches.livejournal.com/309342.html?style=mine) (an AU with a lot of differences, that John has to set right somehow).

All the authors above are great writers overall and you can't go wrong IMO by just looking through all their fic.

My delicious recs for McKay/Sheppard are here (http://delicious.com/lapapesse/mckay/sheppard), but there are a lot of people on delicious with a lot more (and better organized) recs, like minervacat (http://delicious.com/minervacat/mckay%2Fsheppard) and thefourthvine (http://delicious.com/tfv/McKay%2FSheppard).

Weddings, Plural, and Yak: http://cesperanza.livejournal.com/193928.html

Torch aka [livejournal.com profile] flambeau's longer fics are exactly the stuff you might like - lovely plot, and if it says its McShep, it's wonderful McShep. Resonant aka [livejournal.com profile] resonant8 ditto - the hottest hotness can be found among her stories. Jenn aka [livejournal.com profile] seperis does marvelous things with plot, just thread lightly for she's been known to walk on the dark side often as well. Speranza aka [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza is marvelous as well, as is Shalott aka [livejournal.com profile] astolat - I don't think I could pic favorites from their fics, as all but a few would definitely qualify. [livejournal.com profile] ladycat777 cannot do no wrong, no matter the topic (check her tags for McShep), [livejournal.com profile] thegrrrl2002's fics are so good they only get closer to perfection when she co-writtes with [livejournal.com profile] mmmchelle (check [livejournal.com profile] chellefic her stories) whose awesome herself. Then there's [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock and [Bad username or site: > - I dare mention these two in the same breath only because awesomeness like theirs is too great to be used anywhere else. As are <lj user=yin_again @ livejournal.com] ([livejournal.com profile] yinfic is where you can find her fics, natch, as well as her site), [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone, [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan and [livejournal.com profile] sgamadison. And I haven't even gotten to [livejournal.com profile] aesc, [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon, [livejournal.com profile] busaikko, [livejournal.com profile] dogeared... and I'm starting to remember why I decided against reccing stories and recced authors instead, and getting the feeling I'm not managing it any better, either. There's so many awesomely talented folks writing McShep fics that really, limiting yourself to just this one pairing is useless, as any of these folks can take any other pairing, beat you over the head with it, and you'll still walk away dazed wanting more. Er, or that might be just me. ;-)

You know, this request coiuldn't have come at a better time...The McShep love is high at the moment.

I would like to recommend Sheafrotherdon's Iowa-verse. It's pretty much romance-centric, but it's so beautifully written, no exploration of McShep would be complete without it.

http://sheafrotherdon.livejournal.com/105567.html

She's just a really wonderful, romantic writer. I hope you enjoy it.

Hey, so you've gotten a *lot* of recs. Which is not surprising, given the enormous amount of excellent slash in SGA--my own list of top-quality stories could keep you busy for a month or two--but maybe you're a little overwhelmed? So I just wanted to note that of what's listed above, the stories that stand out to me as good answers to your first request are Speranza's "Written by the Victors" and Shalott's "Transcendental". I'd quickly second many of the other recs as well, but those two have plots that are less completely focused on the relationship.

And since I can't help throwing in my favorite overall, I'll say that you've already found some of the best with [livejournal.com profile] the_drifter, and my absolute favorite of hers is Unidentified (http://fiercelydreamed.livejournal.com/8714.html). I also love Helen's style, and I think Your Inevitable Unhappy Ending (http://www.helenish.net/inevitable.shtml) is a great starting point there.

Have fun!

A thought...

Most of the above mentioned fics and authors are available in podfic form--which is awesome for long car rides or certain jobs (I would die of boardom without them). And even if its not really your thing-Written By the Victors is at its best (imo) as a podfic. I think like 30 different people read parts of it. Its amazing. Here's a link to a huge archive of mcshep podfics:

This way you can "catch up" with the rest of us fast without burning out your retinas lol

People have recced you some excellent stories, but I don't see my favorite. Scenes from a Lesser war (http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=5362&warning=12) by [livejournal.com profile] amireal. It's the story that really won me over to McShep, and I still love it. (and her other stories are also wonderful.)
