I have a hankering for any fics where John and Rodney tried a relationship but it didn't work. Break up can be bad or good, I don't mind which!

You could try 'John and Rodney Fucking' by toomuchplor. It's like a five times fic with five different takes or AUs on them in a relationship and the first one is about them hooking up once more after having split up. Another one a bit like you're describing is Seperis's Something More' where Rodney goes to find Sheppard after Sheppard suddenly left Atlantis and vanished. That's a fave of mine, but not quite what you describe. https://archiveofourown.org/works/394009
