John's gene discovered some other way

I've run across a couple of these lately, and I want more - can anyone recommend fics where John's super Ancient gene is discovered some other way? Not by sitting in the chair in the Antarctic outpost? And the further away, the better - I like where he isn't even military, but somehow encounters a piece of Ancient technology. But military is still OK. Whether he still ends up in Atlantis, or just working with the SGC on Earth doesn't matter to me.

I'd prefer McShep, but Gen is OK. McShep is my OTP, so please not anything where either of them is paired with anyone else (unless that's temporary and they end up together - that's OK).
