Howdy- I've managed to mess myself up pretty thoroughly, and am prone to working too hard when I've been told to rest.
I'm asking for the best of the best long stories (here defined as multiples of 10,000 words) which won't bum me out: no dark fic, death fic, extreme character bashing, or poorly punctuated dialogue, please. I'm open to any pairing if the writer really sells it, and also love gen fic. I don't especially want PWP (and yes, in my long fic-reading history, I've seen at least one epic length PWP, not in this fandom. It bored me to tears) and am iffy about extreme kink. My favorite recent series have been the Rock Happy and Ancient John verses; I just reread with much joy Auburn's Green Sea. Over the past three years I've been too busy to read Big Bang stuff, so recommendations from that challenge and others which produce long works are a great gift to me.
Although I'm always excited to be turned on to older stories I may have missed, or reminded of ones I've read before.
Thanks much.
(Mods: I can't figure out which tags to use- it comes down to "all of them except maybe six." I realize this is pretty general, but have found- and gratefully read- similar requests from the past?)

Date: 2013-08-03 01:07 am (UTC)If you don't mind self-recs, I posted in last year's SGA Big Bang. I shipped Evan Lorne/John Sheppard. It is a shapeshifter universe with a twist. I do have a small torture scene but it's not too graphic. It is located: http://archiveofourown.org/works/530048
I hope you feel better soon!

Date: 2013-08-03 01:20 am (UTC)Have to try yours, thanks. Small torture scenes germane to the plot are OK with me; I'm mostly not up to D/s and all whump, all the time (especially since the biggest part of my injury is badly bruised ribs).
Thanks for the good wishes, I'm feeling so much better than yesterday (when my face was puffed up like a beach ball from an infected tooth) that I'm likely to overdo again, bad me.

I'll try to come up with more later. These were off the top of my head.

Date: 2013-08-03 05:34 am (UTC)Pretty much anything by Auburn is good. Have you checked out the rest of her writing on AO3? Most stories are longish.
http://www.sholiofic.com/sga/frost.shtmlThe Killing Frost by Sholiofic - The Daedalus crashes on a frozen world with some of the Atlantis scientists and military on board. It's a mystery - do you like those? She also wrote “Devil and the Deep Blue Sea”, a scary fic with Rodney/Keller and John on a mission. Surprisingly, no real Keller-bashing. http://www.sholiofic.com/sga/deepbluesea.shtml .“Less to Say” by flatlanddan. http://mcshep-match.livejournal.com/37835.html (http://mcshep-match.livejournal.com/37835.html)The expedition has been sent home, and many of them are trying to create a self-governing colony on an island near the UK. Rodney isn’t with them; John writes him letters.
Have you read any of Domenika Marzione's stuff? I'm a big fan Her fic focuses more on the military side of Atlantis, with Sheppard doing more being in charge and less going offworld. Lorne also has a team made up entirely of OC's who are the focus of many of the stories. You completely believe in the world she's writing, characters and all. Her post "Dramatis Personae" http://archiveofourown.org/works/372765 (http://archiveofourown.org/works/372765) provides the background stories for nearly EVERY OC. Not sure why it isn't recommended much.
For a long story of hers, I'd recommend Qui Habitat http://archiveofourown.org/works/276685/chapters/438473 (http://archiveofourown.org/works/276685/chapters/438473) Description - An SGA/SG-1 AU that spins off from the Ori arc that runs through Seasons Nine and Ten of SG-1 by changing one simple thing: the Ori don't lose. Earth is the last significant planet to fall in the Milky Way, but fall it does. Hard. I'd look at everything she has on A03.

Date: 2013-08-03 06:46 am (UTC)'A hundred happy things' series by busaikko - Kaleb's long gone, Jeannie's got a career, Madison has problems, Rodney's got Inner Power!, and Sheppard. . . is pretty much the same. (McKay/Sheppard, transgender)
Heteronormativity, Gender Construction and Nonverbal Signaling in Intercultural Communication: A Comedy by Mad_Maudlin - In which Teyla may be plotting something, Keller may be delusional, Ronon may be cheating and John may in fact be the girl. (Sheppard/Teyla)
Parallax by sajinn - Essential survival gear: genius astrophysicist (check), P-90 (check), food (well, two out of three ain't bad). (McKay/Sheppard)
No Good Deed by Forestgreen - "Dr John Sheppard, Civilian Consultant to the U.S. Air Force, member of SG-1, PhD in Applied Mathematics and PhD in Computer Science, gifted mathematician with a penchant for stealing, trustworthy." A small, satisfied smirk crooked John's lips. He struck the last part out and added a correction in red: "Gifted thief with a penchant for mathematics, not to trust." (Sheppard/Mitchell)
Over 50,000 words:
The magical number seven (plus or minus two) by general_jinjur - This is a treatise on the nature of identity, and the interrelation of legitimacy and memory. Which is to say, it's mostly about John Sheppard, and how he found his way home. Also, there's a high body count, and Kraft Dinner is an exotic delicacy. The Thermopylae (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3203289/1/The-Thermopylae) by Tipper, ~105Kw. Oh my god, it's the most interesting, beautiful and so exciting story! I loved it from first sight.
Searching for a crashed ship on a planet, SGA 1's luck holds true when the Wraith show up. Plenty of angst, whump and mayhem for all. TEAM fic.
Desert Orkids (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3629208/1/Desert-Orkids) by Tipper, ~110Kw. And again adventure and team fic. Reading this is like watching a film: you can't stop.
Sheppard's Team gets caught up in the politics and murder plots of a desert world. Everyone seems to want something from them, but can they survive what that is?
Hidden Resources (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2063864/1/Hidden-Resources) by Tipper, ~50Kw. First season timeline.
Searching again for a Z.P.M on another world, Shepard's Team find themselves on a planet with an unusual form of defense against the Wraith--shame it's broken.
Sheppard Moon (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2826388/1/Sheppard-Moon) by Tipper, ~43Kw. Yep, everything, that was written by Tipper, is worth to read and to reread.
When the shield device around an Ancient spacestation begins to break down, it traps more than just our heroes...it traps the Daedalus.
Doom! (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4015859/1/Doom) by kolyaaa, ~115Kw. It is more triller with serial killer in Atlantis, then an adventure story. How little funny things can turn in serious danger.
A fine story with smashed noses, dangling scientists, drugged colonels, broken bones, plunging jumpers, mashed glasses, bad reception, scary machinery, disappearing floors, SHARKS and an awful lot of water. Everyone gets hurt!
Stuck! (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2652996/1/Stuck) by kolyaaa, ~55Kw.
Annoying McKay is turned into a child while Teyla is aged in an accident. There are cuddly scenes, banter, insults, vomit, pink shoes, Wraith attacks, headaches, cool toys, infirmary scenes. Everything a human could ask for and more.
Timeless (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4759110/1/Timeless) by xVardaX, ~37Kw. Rodney is the most unlucky man.
What if you could control time? What if something never ended or changed because it could be frozen in time forever? Dr Rodney McKay is about to find out the hard way.
Dead or Alive (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2778523/1/Dead-or-Alive) by Greywolf Lupous, ~21Kw. Good old 'let kidnapp McKay' story.
When McKay's abducted right under the team's nose, it's up to Sheppard to save him before it's too late.
McShep
Ship of Fools (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4706084/1/Ship-of-Fools) by InsaneMelon, ~73Kw. Favoite story.
When a secret admirer of Rodney McKay begins to get a little bit too close for comfort it's up to his team to help him figure it out. And Sheppard has to deal with some startling feelings himself.
Tongues of Men and Angls (http://www.alyse.info/sesa_files/tongues.htm) by mad_maudlin, ~60Kw.
When SG-4 is ambushed offworld, an injured Major John Sheppard must put his trust in a Tok'ra agent named McKay to survive. But what secrets is McKay keeping about his mission, the planet, and his own motives for helping John?
Three's a Crowd (http://mckay-sheppard.livejournal.com/2224231.html) by gertinator, ~30Kw.
"Don't worry, Sheppard," Larrin cut in, snarky as usual. "I'm not trying to steal your boyfriend. I just want to borrow him for a while."
The Great Doctor McKay (http://me-ya-ri.livejournal.com/194106.html#cutid1) and Home in the Heart (http://me-ya-ri.livejournal.com/197865.html) by me_ya_ri, ~23Kw. It's can be named like that "A story about how Rodney got a trenchcoat and a sonic screwdriver and became a legend".

Date: 2013-08-03 04:11 pm (UTC)Any story by Rinkafic (I really recommend "Keri" http://archiveofourown.org/series/10983 (It is Mitchell/Sheppard and there is some mpreg but it's a lovely, long series. She wrote the first story for SGA Big Bang)
Another author, LadyRa, who wrote lots of great SGA/SG1 stories. One of my favorite stories by her takes primarily in the SG1 universe but John and Rodney do show up. It is called "First Prime" http://archiveofourown.org/series/45417 (It is primarily Teal'c/Daniel at first (yes, it seems like a weird pairing but OMG she makes it work)
Another long story that I like by LadyRa called "Four Military Men" http://archiveofourown.org/works/877456 (It's a multiple crossover with Sentinel, SGA, SG1 and NCIS but you don't really need to know much about any of the other shows to enjoy the fic).
"Wraithkillers" by LadyRa: John/Rodney, Jack/Daniel: http://visionsofprettyboys.com/Atlantis/WraithKillers.htm
I do recommend LadyRa's other stories which you can find: http://visionsofprettyboys.com/Atlantis/Atlantis.htm
Happy Reading!

Date: 2013-08-09 07:04 am (UTC)Words: 63,390 John is a military prisoner under Colonel Caldwell's command. Controlled by Goa'uld technology, he is little more than a slave. Briefly stationed on Atlantis, his ATA gene is discovered by Rodney, who is a force to be reckoned with. (Actually better than the description).
Anything by Blackchaps is not bad and most are long.
Also Speranza's fiction -- all of it -- http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/atlantis.html
But especially:
Written by the Victors (336k) -- one of the reasons I fell passionately in love w/ the SGA fanfiction world -- and the wonderful art and artifacts created around it - http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/victorsverse.html
also a wonderfully complex AU version of Sheppard's life -- Sheppard's Law (210k) http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Sheppardslaw.html

Date: 2013-08-09 10:35 am (UTC)It's Growing Day by Day (http://archiveofourown.org/works/26735?view_adult=true) by Telesilla
During a routine mission to check out an off-world Ancient lab, team Shep is cut off from Atlantis when the stargate is buried beneath a ton of rubble. There's another way off the planet, but getting there will not be easy.
Months of walking to get to another gate. Ponies. Stories. A chance to learn more about one another in a way they will never have again. This is such a wonderful story about four people who have come to care about one another as a part of Team, but come to really know one another better along the way.
Read it. Now.
