Populated Planets

You know what gets to me about SGA (and SG1 too, come to think of it), adore it though I might? Every time the team visits a planet, they check the first few kilometers by the gate if there's a settlement, and no further (or at least it feels like it). What about the rest of the planet?

So, I was wondering if anyone at all had written a story along those lines. You know, where there actually is a civilisation or some Ancient lab or something else pretty important on the other side of the planet? Just, anything where a planet isn't judged to be useless/useful so easily without any token attempt at checking the rest of the planet.

I'm not explaining this as well as I'd like, sorry. Still. Anyone know anything about that? Any stories you could recommend? Genre/pairing doesn't matter.

I'd suggest Telesilla's It's Growing Day by Day http://archiveofourown.org/works/26735 which is John/Rodney but an excellent team fic. They get trapped on a planet, have to trek across the continent to try and find a way off and find a lot more. (Trying to describe it in a non-spoilery way!)

Interesting, thanks. :) I don't remember that. But that's just what I'm talking about. For all they know.

But then again, fanfiction usually is very good at picking up where shows leave off things, so I thought maybe it was addressed one way or another in some fanfiction.

This is pushing it but, The Great Doctor McKay by Ma-Ya-Ri has McKay travelling half way across a planet to get back to the gate, and back to Atlantis. It's short so may be worth checking out. There's also a sequel

And it's not pushing it at all, this is very much like what I had in mind, since basically the content I'm looking for is a populated planet, preferably a whole continent or more, not populated as in a village's or a city's state's worth. Know what I mean? Not the usual, get chased off by a culture, decide that the culture of barely a few hundred people are all the sentient life on the planet, write off planet because there were no energy readings in that village thing.
