[identity profile] laconicneeds.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] sgarecfinders
Okay, so I recently read [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley's SGA fics, and she has sucked me into the world of McShep. So, I have two requests:

1. any stories like Promises writ in indelible ink that features Rodney being marked by the SGA crew (to never lose him and show how important he is to them)

2. any Rodney/John fics out there that should be read

thanks in advance!

ETA Great Recs Inside and Thanks to Everyone! Any more recs are welcomed

For #2, there are way too many fic that *must* be read. Actually, there are *authors* whose stories *must be read*. [livejournal.com profile] resonant8, [livejournal.com profile] astolat, [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza, [livejournal.com profile] seperis, [livejournal.com profile] thegrrrl2002... and so on and on and on and on. It might be easier if just looked at the posts/rec searches under the McShep pairing tag (http://community.livejournal.com/sgagenrefinders/tag/.+mckay/sheppard), and went from there. Or maybe someone can rec you some newbie starter recs - I could provide a rec list or three, but they're all huge and thematical, and you need to decide if you want to start at a specific theme/genre, or just jump into the frey first. Check the tags out, though, you might find something you like. :-)

I am not generally a fan of slash, but trinityofone's wonderful Mirror Dance (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=13) turned me onto the McShep train and I've yet to find a departure.

I'd have to agree with [livejournal.com profile] debris_k, there are writers that you need to start with. All the ones she pointed out, and some more.

As for "must read" - it depends on what you are after? AU? Canon? Canon AU? There are so many subcatagories that it's sometimes hard to keep track of them all.

For AU I'd recommend
[livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdom and her A Farm in Iowa (http://sheafrotherdon.livejournal.com/105567.html) universe. In which John quits the military to take care of his grandfathers farm, meet up with brilliant Dr Rodney McKay and, well, good things happen, eventually.

[livejournal.com profile] dogeared with the wonderful Nantucket universe (”http://dogeared.livejournal.com/97845.html”). With Rodney being forced on vacation by his friends before he works himself dead. Turns out one can find interesting, former air force men at Nantucket.

Both these universes have some parts written by guest authors, but it all flows together beautifully.

Another idea for where to find long and plotty McShep would be to check out the SGA Big Bang (”http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fiction”) entries. Not one story under 40 000 words.

That should have you busy for a while *G*

I'm new to the fandom as well and have been reading mostly McShep stories. There is just *so* much fic out there! I've been relying on other people's recs, mostly.

I don't think I know any marking stories off the top of my head.

I have been collecting a few rec pages, I hope it's OK to pass them on here:
Recs from sesperis (http://seperis.illuminatedtext.com/recs.html)
More recs from sesperis, for the newbie fan (http://seperis.livejournal.com/533226.html)
Recs from Kormantic and others (http://kormantic.livejournal.com/182454.html)
And just a few recs from me! (http://sasha-feather.livejournal.com/145619.html)

Happy reading!

you're in for a treat - there's LOADS of mcshep out there, you might never run out. i'd highly recommend Song of Companionship (http://mmmchelle.livejournal.com/242602.html) by [livejournal.com profile] mmmchelle - it's one of my all time favourites. there's also a number of great au's out there - a fave of mine is The Neighborly Detective and the Tragic Woobie Widower (http://elayna88.livejournal.com/311636.html) by [livejournal.com profile] elayna88

a handy place to find a list of popular fics would be mckay/sheppard awards - 2007 nominees (http://www.mcshepawards.com/page.php?24)

and, in case you have a few weeks to spare, here's a link to my favourites page on wraithbait (http://www.wraithbait.com/viewuser.php?action=favst&uid=1683) - i'll warn you now though, my taste is eclectic so do read the warnings if you have things you like to avoid!

EDIT: sorry about that! took me a couple of goes to get the links right!

Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose (http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/sga/freedoms_just_another_word.html) by [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic

Because the meaning of life is "do the next thing", and we all carry the seeds of the past into our future. Futurefic, Rodney-centric. Extended spoiler-laden author's DVD commentary here, but read the story first.

[ "SGC finally stops calling him by December. Rodney celebrates by writing a final exam for his relativity class so difficult that it reduces four students to tears in the exam hall. Upon reflection, he decides to be merciful and offer partial credit." ]

and the sequel And The Band's Playing "Hail To The Chief" (http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/sga/and_the_bands_playing.html).

Freedom literally breaks me (in wonderful, fantastic ways) every time I read it. There are no words that will adequately describe the awesomeness of this story, so I'm just going to tell you to go and read it.

This comm is great for high quality recs, just search under the john/rodney tag (or anything else that catches your fancy)

here (http://del.icio.us/liamar13/mckay/sheppard%2Bi_recommend) is a link to my reccomended mckay/sheppard fics. these are the ones i have read over and over and still love to pieces. hopefully you will like them too.

definitely check out the stories at the mcshep awards (linked earlier), not just the winners but the nominees as well because they are all very good and gave a real pleasure re-reading them.

and as for authors may i recommend (in addition to those mentioned earlier) [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan, [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse (check out her website) and yin_again (http://yin-again.com/sgaindex.htm) to name a few.

Hope that helps :D Happy reading!

ETA: and of course, since it has not been rec'd before and it really, definitely needs to be read Written by Victors by Speranza (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Victors.html#index). This actually won best story at the mcshep awards, with good reason. its completely gleeful to read but if you do, definitely set aside some time because it is a long, though completely satisfying, read. Enjoy!

Oh God. I'm seconding Freedom. It's like THE fic to read. No words can describe how wonderful and awesome it is.
