I'm looking for AU's of 'The Return' wherein the Ancients are not as easily able to take over the city - especially any involving the city not allowing them to because it likes Sheppard best.
I know of a couple of fics where the city either refuses to let the expedition leave or John mentally begs the city to refuse to let the Ancients have control, but I can't find them in my list.
Blow away! I have been thinking about that series for the past few days. I'm going to reread it soon. It's a great story, so well done. And I think at least a portion of the story fits this request just fine.
Now that I'm home and have better search tools, I've got some for you.
Explain, by Goddess47, http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=10664--Atlantis has calculated the odds, and John and Rodney being together is the only way the city survives.
I think Sentience was already mentioned.
Darn it, I know there's another one, where Helia thinks she has control, but Atlantis was testing her and refuses to let the gate dial.
That link doesn't work, but this one should (http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=10664) although I can't for the life of me figure out what's broken with yours.
What you want, what fits your request to a T is: And the Stars do Sing by ladycat777 (http://sga-flashfic.livejournal.com/487008.html) [ Alternate link: http://www.subtle-salvation.com/v5/viewstory.php?sid=171&index=1 ]
And it's not even AU, at that!
I’m not supposed to be able to do that, the general says. Am I? She does not confirm his guess. He sees all he needs on her face, her beloved calm, taught upon birth as a life-long defense against the vagaries of the universe, deserting her when she needs it most.
Atlantis rejects Helia and her crew. A story told from Helia's POV, that explains a few things about the "Return" episodes. I always wish the story was longer than it is (<2.000 words), because it really could have easily turned into an epic-length story, and so leaves you craving for more.
