[identity profile] ashke.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] sgarecfinders
  Hello,

    I have three requests:

       1. I would like stories where John is a geek or pretends to be a geek (I just finished reading "Ordinary Life" by Shalott and Speranza). I do like stories where he is an actual geek but him pretending to be one is fine too.

       2. I'm looking for stories that deal with Ronon's issues/desires of wanting John Sheppard to be his taskmaster. If the stories deal with Ronon's own feeling for Kell, etc, all the better. I prefer slash but any form of stories is fine (ie. het or team of gen).

       3. Any stories that play with an actual plot of something else that is fairly well known. For instance, the story that plays with the plot of "Pretty Woman" but with a SGA twist. ("King of Wishful Thinking" by Margarks). I would prefer slash pairings (any is fine) but I would also accept het or general.

Thank you for your help in advance!

For 1, Cred (http://trickster.org/res/cred.html) by [livejournal.com profile] resonant8. McShep, ~2,100 words. Also the classic in many categories Indelible (http://archiveofourown.org/works/120496?view_full_work=true) by [livejournal.com profile] shaenie. McShep, ~128,300 words.
You may also be interested in these earlier searches:

And you might want to try scrolling through earlier searches tagged geek-fic/science themes (http://sgagenrefinders.livejournal.com/tag/geek-fic%2Fscience%20themes) (and perhaps consider adding that tag to your post as well). Happy reading! :)

Also, for 3, you may want to check out entries at the [livejournal.com profile] reel_sga community, and some of the favorite fusions (http://sgversetop5.livejournal.com/tag/genre%3A%20fusion) and crossovers (http://sgversetop5.livejournal.com/tag/genre%3A%20crossover) people recced at [livejournal.com profile] sgversetop5, many though not all slash.

And of course AU fusions with other well-known canons are definitely represented on the Giant McShep AU List (http://www.squidge.org/GiantMcShepAUList/the-actual-list), but they're not listed by such (by John/Rodney's AU profession instead) -- still, there are many gems on there you might enjoy.

#2:

Morale in the Workplace (http://kestrelsan.sockiipress.org/morale.html). Ronon needs John to mark him the way a taskmaster would.

Hi -- not AU-specific, but crossroads (http://www.fictionresource.com/sga/index.php) indexes many, many different slash and multi SGA fics by pairing, and for some of the fics listed the titles (and summary lines, for those that have them) can give an indication of the AU-ness.

Of course this comm is very handy too, if you filter on requests that include the tags "au (http://sgagenrefinders.livejournal.com/tag/au)" or "crossover/fusion (http://sgagenrefinders.livejournal.com/tag/crossovers%20%26%20fusions)" and scroll down for requests that look like they might have responses with more stories you'd like.

As far as I know, [livejournal.com profile] elderwitty (initially spurred on by [livejournal.com profile] anonymoouse) is the only one to have done such a comprehensive listing of SGA AU fics in any pairing. However, there are smaller rec (rather than themed) lists for various AU themes that include other pairings than McShep.

Besides the reclists, reccers, and themed lists linked to in my (warning: self-pimp!) Newer SGA Readers Guide (http://skaredykat.livejournal.com/1083.html) post -- which are far from the only existing ones -- the guides for various pairings that are being worked on at [livejournal.com profile] sga_guide will likely have recs for some AU fics for most pairings. The guides are a work in progess, but will eventually be a great resource for all kinds of fanworks for all kinds of SGA pairings (and characters). :)

The [livejournal.com profile] sga_guide List of Resources (http://sga-guide.livejournal.com/687.html) post (to which more will be added) has some other ways as well to find fanworks for pairings or characters you might like.

You might also try seeing if there are links to pairing-specific reclists at the fanlore (http://www.fanlore.org) pages for pairings you're interested in.

Another thing you could try is using delicious (better this month than next though, as some older accounts may become inaccessible then) to search for pairings you're interested in + AU; for example "Teyla/Elizabeth" and "AU" in one search; that might get you several such fics.

You can also search the SGA Big Bang site (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net) by pairing, and (though it's a little trickier/requires a bit more patience) its successor AtlantisBigBang on the AO3 (http://archiveofourown.org/collections/atlantisbigbang) (and the AO3 in general, as well as Wraithbait and other archives), and the summaries for those fics should give you an idea if they're AU. The masterlists (2010 (http://sgareversebang.dreamwidth.org/15650.html), 2011 (http://sgareversebang.dreamwidth.org/39773.html)) for [livejournal.com profile] sgareversebang should also give you a sense if they're AU; pairings for all fics are indicated.

Last, a personal rec: [livejournal.com profile] busaikko writes many different SGA pairings (including but far from limited to McShep) in a way enjoy, sometimes AU; you can find many of her fics at the AO3 (http://archiveofourown.org/users/busaikko/pseuds/busaikko), where you can filter them for each pairing you might be interested in.

Have fun discovering and reading lots of SGA fic, I hope! :)

If you don't mind self-pimps, I wrote Trajectories of Two Moving Objects (http://scrollgirl.dreamwidth.org/750365.html) for sga_santa last year. It has John as an SGC civilian scientist. John/Cam, SG-1 cameos.

I've thought of another one: Pegasus Purgatorio (http://hawksong.com/~momskitchen/SGA_Fic/purgatorio.htm) by Mrs Hamill. It's a long engaging fic and John does a lot of math. (McShep)
