So I'm trying to convert my cousin (love to talk Atlantis) to the altar of fanfiction, but he won't read it unless it is on his kindle. Does anyone know fanfiction that can be loaded onto kindles? I'm looking for some really good gen (he's a straight and probably not intrested in slash even if it's awesome...baby steps people) Stargate SG-1 would also be okay or canon pairings. Thanks so much for the help.

Try the Ebook Library (http://amalthia.mediawood.net/ebooks/index.php). :)

In different formats but you can filter, gen and slash.

Please tag (http://community.livejournal.com/sgagenrefinders/profile#tag) your post, thanks!

And to kind of answer your request, all the stories on AO3 can be downloaded in various e-reader formats, as well as .pdf; if none of the ones there work for a kindle, you or your cousin can download the freeware program Calibre (I scroogled for e-readers for WinXP and found it straight away) which claims to be able to convert any e-reader format file into a different e-reader format file. (I only use it to read e-books and comics, but it's really big on pointing out how convert-y it is.) Hope that helps!

You might try the Auto Kindle eBook Converter program (can download on page linked below). I checked with my Norton anti-virus program and didn't find any viruses in the downloaded program. And this program can convert any .html file into a .mobi file, which the Kindle reads. I was a happy camper when I found this program; I've already converted tons of the Big Bang fics and am enjoying them on my Kindle. Hope it works as well for you. :)

Ditto on AO3, Ebook Library, & Calibre. I've got a Kindle and the .mobi or .prc files are the right format. And Calibre usually works well for conversion from one ebook format to another--it's a little iffy for .pdfs (which is totally Adobe's fault because pdfs are terrible), but for most other formats it works fine.

Very welcome. :) On doing more reading on the webpage, it also converts pdf files to mobi, which can be a godsend 'cause I haven't had really good luck with pdfs on my Kindle. They're really hard to read. I personally haven't tried converting a pdf with the above program yet, but you might try that too. :)

Thanks so much for this link. I have jury duty tomorrow and now that I have porn to make the waiting bearable, all is well.

I 'low tech it' - I just copy and paste it into a .pages file (I'm on a mac) and then I export to PDF, making sure that I use book sized pages.

It's cheap! It's easy! but you have to have a macbook......

You know, you can convert pdf files to kindle by just emailing the pdf file to your kindle email (you can find it on Amazon under MyAccount if you don't know it) -- just put CONVERT in the subject line, and any files attached in that mail will be converted and sent to your kindle within a few minutes.

I have not been happy with the native pdf reader on the kindle either, and this email process turned out to be much faster than I'd expected and very easy.

Just as an FYI...I have been using my kindle for years reading fan fic right off the net as it has the capacity to open web pages, etc... It's perfect for live journal and most fic websites. Just google your request or key in the web link in the search bar. It has been a huge way of passing the time in airports, airplanes, and hotels for me!

The majority of stuff on my kindle is fanfic. I copy paste into microsoft word and then save as a plaintext file directly to my kindle. have had no problems doing this.

Another vote for Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/). I find it easy to use and very convenient. Save a page off the internet onto your computer (as an .html file), and Calibre will change it into .mobi format and if you have your Kindle plugged in via USB to your computer, it will also send the file to it upon request. It also will convert several other file types, including .txt and .pdf.

Every fic on AO3 can be downloaded in MOBI format. That's Kindle's non-DRM format.

Use either Windows Explorer or My Computer to copy the ebook file to the Kindles's Documents folder.

Also, I've saved tons of facfic to my hard drive using copy/paste into a Word document and saving as a .doc file. Email a doc file to a Kindle and Amazon converts it and puts it on the Kindle.

yeah any archive that allows download in Mobi format is ideal for the Kindle - yes the Kindle can read pdf files but sometimes it doesn't handle some of the internal formatting of a PDF file all that well but the Mobi is the non-DRM format of the Kindle books that Amazon sells for the Kindle.

There is also a great program you can download called FanFictionDownLoader which lets you download any stories from Fanfiction.net in any format. You just open the story and cut and paste the URL. The other great thing is that you can choose to download one or all chapters, you don't need to sit and download 57 different chapters at a time, great time saver.
