I'm looking to convert a friend to a Rodney McKay fan.  To do this I need a slash or gen story where Rodney was abused in some manner as a child and that's what's largely responsible for the way he is now.

There's mention of Rodney's less-than-loving, hard-as-nails-and-just-as-pleasant-to-children in But Never the Nights (http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=4627) by lavvyan. It's long, it's wonderful, and although the actual mention of the abuse is small, it still has an impact as a whole. I'd recommend this as one of the best Rodney/John POV stories.

Not exactly what your looking for but these are some stories that make us feel for Rodney.

A Beautiful Lifetime Event. (http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/stargate/lifetime_event.html) He's still Rodney but Rodney with a daughter and John. Who doesn't love a good kidfic? Especially this one? This was the first Atlantis story I ever read, after only have seen the pilot. It totally biased my opinion toward Rodney.

Time In A Bottle. (http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/stargate/time_in_a_bottle.html) If John can grow to love him after spending every single hour of every day, how can we not?

Yes, Rodney can be hard to deal with sometimes. But in the end he always pulls through, especially for his friends. Even if they've given up on him.
