[identity profile] linziday.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] sgarecfinders
Hi everyone,

I'm writing a fic and for some reason I'm struggling with John and Rodney's voices. I don't know why. I've written a ton of fics and it's never happened before. But I have a solution! (Or, hopefully, *you* have the solution. :0)

I'd like to find the best John and Rodney voices out there. You know, the fics that make you say "Holy cow, that was spot on!" or "Wow, the writer really nailed that dialogue." or "Now *that* is what the boys sounds like."  To be clear, I'm looking for good characterization both internally (the way they think and feel) and externally (the things they say and do).  I'm hoping my muse will be inspired by such excellence!

Gen, het, slash, whatever. Just please let me know which is which. Even if I don't read them, I'm sure others will appreciate the recs.

Thank you!! (And my poor fic thanks you.)

** Note to mods: I hope this request is all right. It's not so much of a genre as it is a style of writing, but I think I've seen writing style requests here before. If this isn't ok to post, let me know and I'll take it down.

I love the McKay voice/characterization in Gayworld by Zelempa [http://www.merples.com/fic/cliche.shtml]. (story is slash, humor, McKay/Sheppard)

I won't recommend specific stories, but I can recommend a number of authors. Most anything written by Tipper, friendshipper (aka Sholio), NotTasha, cybersyd42, nebbyJen, or gaffer42 will give you good gen voices for everyone, especially Rodney and John. Fiction by these authors is consistently well-written, with accurately-drawn characters and plots that hold my interest. All these authors write gen fic.

For me, absolutely no one comes anywhere near ltlj in writing John Sheppard. Hers is practically the only John POV I'll read.

You might also try minnow1212 and thisisbone. Their fic is linked in their memories, I believe.

I was just talking with a friend about how Dasha's Salt of the Earth (http://www.area52hkh.net/asd/dasha/saltof01.php) has one of the very best Rodney voices. (He's not-quite-himself and subdued in larges parts of the story, and the contrast is really interesting, too... adds to the spot-on characterization.)
