Heyla,
Why this genre? Well, I read a ficcie where Kavanaugh caught John and Rodney in a slightly compromising position. They called him into Elizabeth's office to make sure he'd be quiet. He looked all hurt. Things happened and eventually he and Rodney developed a kind of mentor/friend relationship. And Kavanaugh actually *proved* to be a decent person with something to contribute. By the end I wanted to read more fics where he proved to be decent despite the past, so I came here. ^_^ I like the whole broadening of the character. It's interesting. And actually it showed new depths of Rodney's character as well because he, in his own Rodney way, began to defend Kavanaugh. Catalystic events are so much fun.

I'm really hoping for recs for fics where Kavanaugh actually *develops* into a decent person and you know, he's somewhat happy instead of crabby all the time. Pairing wise I'm not overly picky. I do adore McShep, but I won't turn down a different slash pairing/trio etc. or Gen. Just please, if you have a moment, label them. I also won't turn down ones where he just *is* decent. I love AU's as well.

I can't think of any concrete story right now, but have you checked out [livejournal.com profile] kavtolanon (Kavanagh Tolerators Anonymous)?

I can't find either link right now, but maybe someone else will recognize these. I think they're both McShep.

There's one set shortly post-Trinity in which Rodney falls from a balcony and is peeved that no one meets him as he slowly hacks his way past locked doors to get back to the living levels. He encounters Kavanagh in that journey, and the two have a peaceable moment together.

There's one set in the "Road Not Traveled" verse in which Earth has to evacuate. That McKay wonders why the Sam who visted from "our" world warned him not to take Kavanagh, because he's the only one who can repair eyeglass lenses. I think he turns out generally okay otherwise, too, there.

I just finished reading Unified theory by sg atlantis light
http://sgatlantislight.livejournal.com/42955.html

There's a bit of Kavanagh in that and he seems quite okay. Its sort of a WIP / unfinished series but don't let that scare you off. Definitely worth reading.

I know I've read the second one- it was a Big Bang fic, and marked as an SG-1/SGA crossover. It was really good, and yeah, the AU Kavanaugh turns out decent. Don't remember the title, but it's something of a classic.

Thanks for making this request, I like decent!Kav fics.

Five Things You May Not Know About John Sheppard (http://toft-froggy.livejournal.com/161992.html) by [livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy is one of those very short '5 Things' memes. It's McShep, but Kavanaugh features prominently.

Yes! Thank you! Draconian Measures (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=27)! I just needed the Big Bang hint. Thanks -- that was driving me crazy. I'll find the other eventually ....

Hooray for [livejournal.com profile] iibnf's Post-Trinity list! The first one I mentioned is Trinity's Fall (http://lavvyan.livejournal.com/12730.html).

There is a fic where Kav adopts or is adopted by a child. A little boy I think. The child is mute and has some sort of healing ability???? At first everyone is appalled but realise that Kav is actually doing a good job raising the boy. May be Carson/John/Rodney but I could be wrong there.

There is The lonely sea, by Tarlan : http://www.davidhewlett.co.uk/fiction/viewstory.php?sid=95

I don't know if it's what you are searching for, because Kavanaugh is not that important in this fic, but i guess he is a decent being for once. It's an Au mcshep.

BTW, could you link to the story you read that you mentioned in your post? I'm curious now.

The whole first paragraph is pretty much breaking our rules regarding specific fic searches, so please remove it till the story is found. Thanks for understanding.

I wrote Necessary Things (Settling the Balance) (http://community.livejournal.com/gateverse_remix/19589.html), in which John and Kavanagh have a bit of a moment. It's a remix of a mcsheppy fic, but mine is pairing free; it was also written pre-season 2, so it's a bit au.

I just refound Changeling (http://gila.faking-sanity.net/stargate/changeling.html), in which Kavanagh has a cameo as a more-than-decent person. McKay/Beckett, crack.

That was the Broken Series, a very popular and very long series. The adoption doesn't take place until later, but a great story all the same. I don't have a link on me, but it's popular enough that some looking around should pull it up. :)

Yeah, it was really good. The ships were Mcshep and Carson/Zelenka, I think, and the four of then end up as the boy's godfathers, sort of. Kavanagh also has a brother-in-law who's a chaplain.

It doesn't look like anyone's suggested Traps (Human-Sized Mouse Ones) (http://community.livejournal.com/mckay_sheppard/72430.html) by [livejournal.com profile] laytoncolt, which is a McShep heavily featuring Kavanagh. In the author's words: "I'm actually writing Kavanagh, and not as an unbearable jerk. Well, not completely, anyway." Sheppard and Kavanagh become sort of friendly, much to Rodney's dismay.

Incomplete Data Set (http://lunabee34.livejournal.com/119823.html) and the sequel, Experimental Phase (http://lunabee34.livejournal.com/154875.html) by [livejournal.com profile] lunabee34, Kavanagh/Bates. Kavanagh starts out kind of assholish and gets better.

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall (http://www.davidhewlett.co.uk/fiction/viewstory.php?sid=35&chapter=1) by Tarlan, John/Rodney, neat Kavanagh cameo.
