So, my boyfriend is incredibly against the very idea of fanfiction. He thinks it's all porn (and sees that as a bad thing!). However, I'd like to make him realize that I'm not, in fact, crazy and sleazy. But all I read is McShep, and I think that's probably not the best place to start.

REQUEST: a fic, preferably gen (or VERY tame slash), with little necessary existing knowledge of SGA canon, and, most of all, GOOD. I don't know if this exists, haha, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks! <3

Some excellent gen SGA fics are written by the following authors.
Nottasha http://www.nottasha.com/atlantis.htm
Tipper http://megtipper.tripod.com/fanfiction6.htm
You can find more gen authors in the links listed on both their websites, but they are two of my favs.

The Retrograde series on Watergate site http://www.ltljverse.com/watergate/ by Martha Wilson is excellent too, but it's xover with SG1. If he likes SG1 too, might start him there.

I'd like to second Retrograde. I read it to my husband who isn't into fanfiction at all. It's long and extremely good.

[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper (Sholio) writes good gen fics. Sometimes there is a het pairing or a slashy overtone, but they're much more focused on friendship.

[livejournal.com profile] liketheriverrun (liketheriver) writes both gen and slash, which might actually be good. If your guy likes her gen stuff, you could ease him toward her slashy stuff. /sneaky

[livejournal.com profile] leesa_perrie writes great SGA Gen!

I'm extremely blessed. My husband not only tolerates my love of fanfiction, but he's watched SGA all five seasons and knows the canon very well -- and he beta-reads every story I write. I have my own built-in beta!

I second the rec for any of miss-porcupine's writing. The Jenny code was an excellent read.

My personal favorite is
Freedom's just another word for nothing left to loose
http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/sga/freedoms_just_another_word.html
Future fic, past main-charactor death and past slash relationship.
Quite long, so maybe not for beginners.
All you really need to know about SGA (I think)is J&R were leading the millitary and scientists on a base in a different galaxy, and were on the same team.
But I think it's a really good example that slash fanfic isn't all about porn or fluffy romance.(I'm not saying that's bad, I enjoy romance. But some people might find romance all...mushy?)

My Home & Native Land (http://community.livejournal.com/i_defeated_sga/11675.html?style=mine) by [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge
It's by cb so you know it's written well (or if you don't, you should definitely read it to find out!) It has no pairings at all and fleshes out a background character as well as features Ronon. Unendingly awesome. If you're Canadian it's just a plus!

My Father Before Me (http://telleer.livejournal.com/326670.html?style=mine) by [livejournal.com profile] telleer.
It is McShep, but it's not what you'd expect. Also, I cried, as did a lot of people who read this. Bring kleenex.

Stargate Atlantis specific site
has a lot of variety as far as general stories, ship/het, slash and more
there are a lot of writers who contribute

some of the stories are just stories and have no sex...just extensions of the shows.... and that might be what you are looking for to ease him into the idea

If your BF is a fan of gender equality/gay rights/stuff like that, I'd recommend these two:

If You Wanna Kiss The Sky: http://siegeofangels.livejournal.com/419084.html

You've Written Your Own Directions (And Whistled the Rules of Change): http://community.livejournal.com/mcshep_match/43881.html

The second one does have a sex scene, but it's not exactly porn, I don't think.

Some of my favorites:

Signs by ammanalien: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3563518/1/
Sheppard searches for McKay in a landscape of destruction. HC and whumpy angst

Night Highway by Tipper: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3860858/1/
The Jumper is stranded several light years away from the nearest Stargate. The Team knows the Apollo will find them before they run out of power, but there's a problem. Rodney's very sick and he's running out of time. McKay hc

Of Coloring Books and Lt. Colonels: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3151681/1/
After a week and a half of horrible torture, Sheppard becomes obsessed with a coloring book, and Rodney doesn't get it. Sheppard whump, Rodney angst and POV. Sheppard/Rodney friendship and nothing more.

Drinking In The Dark by rubycaspar: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3995427/1/
John and Ronon have a talk about their love lives over a bottle of something. Ronon gives John a few hard truths.

Maybe I'm Dead, I Just Haven't Stopped Moving Yet by cybersyd42: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3148301/1/
The consequences of a mission gone wrong have a devastating impact on the SGA team.

All are gen. I rec'd these in particular because I thought they might appeal to a guy-- for example, fic with lots of action (or the aftermath of action).

"Maybe I'm Dead" is my all time favorite and is the fic that launched my interest in SGA fanfic. It's long, but extremely well written and you don't need to know the ins and outs of SGA to get it. (In fact, I don't think I knew half the characters' names when I read it.) If you want a shorter one, I'd rec Drinking In The Dark. It's basically Shep and Ronon bonding over alcohol and talk of women. You can't get more guy than that. ;0)

Good luck!

Dog Days (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_genficathon/13643.html) in which Rodney makes John a robot dog
Dogs of War (http://kriadydragon.livejournal.com/116838.html) in which the team is captured and enslaved... they make really sucky slaves(very funny)
The Legend of Smedley Duckler, the Fighting Quacker (http://www.offpanel.net/dmz/sga/smedley.html) in which the Marines adopt the biology departments not-duck as a mascot
The Care and Feeding of Marines (http://lilyleia78.livejournal.com/29958.html?style=mine) Lorne plays fetch with the Marines
My Home And Native Land (http://community.livejournal.com/i_defeated_sga/11675.html#cutid1) A fantastic Ronon story in which Gatenition Chuch instructs him about Canada, a must read
Harsh Continent (http://community.livejournal.com/mckay_sheppard/644310.html) A pre-rising Sheppard story
And Thanks For The Fish (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/266115.html) Summary: The Pegasus Galaxy has penpals. Too bad they don't have Sheppard incoming alarms...

Another rec for Retrograde and if I'm remembering right, Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose (http://synecdochic.livejournal.com/61471.html) -- it's slash, but one partner is dead, so there's nothing graphic. Hell, you'll enjoy it, even if it's not for him :-)

"Athosian For Beginners" is Rodney/Teyla and PG, and I love it because it really plays with the social implications of alienation and language that the show skims over. It is smart and sweet, and is also very relevant to some of the cultural discussions that have been taking place recently.

If he likes pirates (and who doesn't?) I really recommend The Pirate's Prisoner (http://rhymer23.livejournal.com/35046.html) by [livejournal.com profile] rhymer23.

Eternity (http://kriadydragon.livejournal.com/63484.html) by [livejournal.com profile] kriadydragon is a lovely and melancholic (and LONG) futurefic about John and his lonesome travels through the universe. There is some het in the latter half, but it's gen in spirit.

The New Frontier (http://www.aliencorn.net/stories/new.html) by [livejournal.com profile] harriet_spy also takes place in the future (even if it's a version of the future that's been Jossed by now) and has a great Wild West feel to it.

Raiders of the Seven System (http://www.ltljverse.com/watergate/stories/raiders.htm) by Martha Wilson. More pirates, but this time they're pirates in space. :P

Lots of good gen recs with great synopsis (synopi? synopsises?) and reasons why they've been rec'd.

One of the best fic's I've read: The Hard Prayer (http://rheanna27.livejournal.com/95020.html) by [livejournal.com profile] rheanna27. It's an amazing apocalyptic AU with a happy ending and beautiful psychology. It's McShep, but very tame, tentative even.
