permanent damage
Mar. 16th, 2008 07:01 pmI'm looking for fics where one (or more! I'm not picky!) of the team is permanently damaged (ill, disabled, changed, what have you). I'm more interested in the process of rehabilitation and recovery, and the reactions/support of others, than in the whumpage. Last-minute miracles (and lo! the blind shall see!) are a particular squick of mine, sorry to say. I've no objections to people being sent back to Earth or AUs. (In case you think I'm morbid, well: I just came back from a very, very bad neighbourhood council meeting!)

(which to be honest included a bit too much about toilet schedules for paraplegics than I really wanted to read about, iirc)
also this blind!John fic:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3871629/1/The_Sky_is_Not_Less_Blue
has him sent back to earth. It's still a WIP and it does seem to head into the direction of an eventual ancient tech fix, but there's chapters of rehabilitations and recovery and therapy before, with angst of John having to rely on family and so on (his father it was started before Outcast), and the ancient tech doesn't fix instantly once it's applied either.
There's a thematic listing for disability fic, that has an SGA section, though not all of these are permanent:

It doesn't quite fit the bill for what you want, per se, but the recovery process is still quite...um...painful

List of Disability Fic (http://www.geocities.com/disability_fanfic/stargateatlantis.html) - some of these do have 'happy'/miraculous endings tho.
Also, this (http://del.icio.us/loriel_eris/disability+sga+to_read) is a list of fic that I've tagged 'disability' but haven't read, so I have no idea what they're about/how they end.

There's two sequels to the story so far and the author is writing another. They are http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3774916/1/Conquering_Adversities and

This one isn't all that angsty; no fix-its, though, just getting by remarkably well.
Maybe I'm Dead, I Just Haven't Stopped Moving Yet (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3148301/1/Maybe_Im_Dead_I_Just_Havent_Stopped_Moving_Yet) (gen, Rodney hurt)
This might've been rec'ed above, it's a favorite of mine, but it does have a fix-it - not last-minute, though (I think he gets physically healed less than two-thirds through, but it's more about the psychological recovery.)
