ancient or ascended John?

I know this has been asked before, but it has been a while, so maybe someone has encountered more stories since then. *is eternally hopeful*

I'm looking for stories in which Sheppard is an Ancient (or Ori), i.e. he's reincarnated, descended with amnesia, or hiding intentionally as human etc. not stories in which he's possessed/taken over by an Ancient/Ori or the like, or alternatively stories in which John ascends.

I only remember stories with Rodney ascending and with Carson for Bigbang. Which are you thinking of?

Wasn't Uncanny Valley the one where an Ancient was kind of body sharing with John, then left him and John became brain damaged shell? I remember that more along the line of being possessed by one. I admit Ihaven't reread it though because I remembered it as so depressing...

And I actually read the other yesterday after checking your tags *g*, but to me it seemed more like a John with a strong ATA gene story, rather than him being an actual Ancient, and thought he gets just trapped in the AI machine while his body seems dead rather than ascending, but I guess that one is a matter of interpretation.

Yes, that is the one. totally depressing... I'm usually pretty lenient and broad for genre tags like that--no they don't really fit perfectly but can kinda hang on the edge. I'll keep my eyes peeled for any others!

You're right. I went through the BigBang stories and they are not what I was thining of.

There was something about the time he got stuck inte the time dilation field. He actually paid attention to the meditation lessons and such.

Could be I'm making this up though... It's not impossible that what I remember is a plot for something that somone wanted to write. *even more confused/memory like a fish!*

No, sorry, I haven't. They don't come up very often do they? It's a pity because it's a really interesting idea and I think, until recently, there were enough gaps in canon to support it.

I will let you know from now on if I ever come across any.

And yeah, I think it is a bit odd, especially since the related fanfic tropes of John having a stronger/special/different ATA gene than the other gene carriers and/or a special/close connection to Atlantis are quite common in comparison, and it's not like those were true on the show itself either.

True. The Atlantis Hearts John trope is fanon. But maybe the concept of John being something other than fully human isn't that popular. Having said that Ascention fic isn't that common either.

I read one recently - both John and Rodney end up ascending in old age after they escape from slavery and then have escape from an Atlantis which has become heavily militarised in their absence. But that's the only one for a while. A good fic, but a little grim for my tastes.

Maybe if we started a challenge? Get the idea going again? Something to keep us warm at nights between seasons? Can't believe there's only one episode left!

Well, in the prompts poll for the SGA Big Bang one of the options is "John is more Ancient than anyone realizes." I hope it'll make it into an actual challenge prompt and inspire some nice long fic.
